Robin,
I'd love some shots. I'd also like to know how easy moving around
is. The Photos on the Duckflat site make it look huge but I suspect a

Wow, kind of like "gun'nle bobbing" where you stand on a canoe's or
skiff's aft gun'wales and bounce by flexing your knees for forward
propulsion? Great fun on a hot day as you're sure to fall in a few
times til you get the hang of it.
I'f love to see the mechanics of hooking the bedsprings to the prop.
Full speed ahead darling! Bounce! Bounce! Bounce!
Lean left sweety, there's foul ground to starboard!
Fuel econy? Horrendous! All that champers and strawberries!

Wondering if TIMS can be "gun'wale bobbed" by a crew of 30 or so
sveldt spandex covered "bobbers" as Peter Lenihan beat the drum and

I know of no Mundoos anywhere near me and since I live in Tasmania, which is separated by a couple of hundred miles of water (Bass Strait )from mainland Australia I rarely get over to the mainland, let alone South Australia where the Mundoos are based. If by any unlikely chance I do see one I'll certainly check it out and let you know.

I don't think it would be a good idea to reduce diablo to 12',she would become alot more tender(up to a point) at that size and be only suitable for 2-3 adults

A first SWAG says that if the measurements are 80% of the original, the
volume will be half. Does the 57 lb motor represent half the weight of the
24 hp recommended? (0.8 x 0.8 x 0.8 = 0.512)

Hello to you all , This is my first post ,as a member of this
group , I am the proud Owner/Builder of a Diablo . She is over three
years old , and has seen some heavy use , A wonderfull boat , i use
a 15 hp Honda 4 Stroke ,and it makes her fly! I made some
Modifications to the seating ,to be comfortable as a fishing
boat ,and it works very well.I used out door carpet for most of the
interior , sure saves a lot of sanding on the tape seams ect , and
looks good to i think ! Have posted a number of photos,in the photo

I liked the idea of just building the 15' and moving the transom up.
The bow idea I had was to just do the same thing, cut a ply bow piece
and take away the last pointy 6inches or so, keeping the shape
cutwater and high bow in place.
Thanks for the ideas one and all, Richard

A wedge cutout in the transom bottom lets me run a short shaft motor

I've built a Diablo. While it's more common to see people stretching
them to 18', it could easily be built shorter. If I were to do that
I'd leave the bow as designed and chop 2 feet off the stern. The aft
8 feet of Diablo are all straight, flat panels. It would be a simple
matter to just mount the transom as far inboard as desired and chop
off the excess.

I am looking to replace my 12ft Lund Aluminum skiff that I use as a
tender for my sailboat. I think that the Diablo would be a good boat

I second the motion on this. We actually use the boat more for
swimming than fishing, I can actually sit on the gunwale and ease
myself into the water or climb in by just rolling myself in. I was
actually thinking of trying to set a few lobster pots this year just
to see what would happen.
The only problem is its light weight. It does blow around a lot.

Oh, you can stand on the gunwale of this boat and it won't go under. It just
rolls down to within eight inches or a foot of the water, and stays there.
Makes it very easy to board over the side after a swim. Also makes it
grandma's preferred skiff, because at age 71 she can board from the beach
by sitting on the gunwale and gently swinging her legs over. Hadn't really
thought about it before, but it's another virtue of this remarkable boat.

When you say ieal, it sounds as though you need to
stay poised in the middle. Kind of like a canoe. Of
course there are pictures of canoes being used for the
earliest tarpon and bonefishing. And then there is
the guy who uses a canoe and a stepladder. If you
caught a large fish, could the not so dead weight be
hauled over the side?
The ideal boat is any boat as far as I am concerned
having shore fished the keys, I would have prefered
even a Lund.

I had a center console on my Diablo and removed it after 2 years. I
found that it was in the way when fishing, and made it much harder to
maintain. I also can stand on the center seat, bow platform, or
stern seats to reach my intended target. The boat is so narrow that
the center console really impedes travel around the boat.
All I have to do to clean up at the end of the season is to remove
the motor with the motor clamps and then flip the boat upside down.
That's it!
I use a cheap trailer for my 13' racing dinghy. The Diablo hangs off
the back about 1 foot. no problem so far. The motor I use is a 10
hp longshaft Johnson 2 stroke. It planes with 2 aboard.
My only complaint is that as a light boat it blows around
considerable. I tried to put on a plank keel but it did not help
much. Also, if you put the keel on, stop it about a foot from the
transom or you get a terribly rooster tail!
Time to get your lumber and start.
Happy Boating,
David Jost

A Fisherman's Skiff would undoubtedly be more
practical for stand up fishing, but man, the Diablo is
such a pretty boat. A local (Lower Delaware) fellow
built and fishes one here around the mouth of the
Delaware Bay, and I can identify it from as far away
as I can make out the profile. There is nothing else
around here with a sheer line like that. Might make
it worth trying to fly fish sitting down. . . .

speed, in rough weather, a console might be fun. But if you're after a
"walk around" design, this is the wrong boat. It's pretty unstable
initially; if you step outside the narrow flat bottom, the boat goes right
over until the chine hits the water. Then it's rock solid, but at an
uncomfortable angle.

transom knees were pretty much totally rotted. Also rot due to bad
detailing of the transom. I put in big 8' seats/flotation chambers port &
stbd (eliminating the transom knee), and added a raised deck in the forward
section. 5" isn't high enough to leave the scuppers open when in use
(though perhaps a centered scupper would work better.)
I made lots of other modifications for my unique circumstances, like cutting
a notch in the bottom of the 19" transom, so a short shaft motor performs
better - it will now run wide open in well under a foot of water...

a bit with more than 6-800 lbs aboard. It goes with an 8, (or, lately, on
1 cylinder of the 15) but won't win any races. I think my next engine may
be a 25.
Hope this is helpful,

I don't know what kind of Fly Fishing you are
referring to, but if you are talking about flats
fishing or similar, then I corresponded with Bolger
years ago with the idea of putting a center console on
a fisherman's skiff, which they later did with the
larger version, and decking of the type required for
efficient flats fishing. He was willing to review my
changes tot he design, if I wanted to proceed with it.
This is still a boat that I would like to build, I
think it is a very practical alternative to the rather
expensive flats boats one sees. It would also be good
for Bass etc...
In the end, I designed and built the 16'
BassAckwards, a catamaran fishing platform. It has
all the stability and platform requirements, while
probably weighing about as much as the bottom on a
fisherman's skiff. On the other hand, it just takes a
kicker, and a electric motor.

referring to, but if you are talking about flats
fishing or similar, then I corresponded with Bolger
years ago with the idea of putting a center console on
a fisherman's skiff, which they later did with the
larger version, and decking of the type required for
efficient flats fishing.

David,
I agree that Diablo is definitely a motor boat, but my experience at
rowing it SLOWLY has been most enjoyable, particularly with a couple of
people as ballast to give it momentum.

Stuart,
I couldn't disagree with you more on this. Diablo is a dog to
row. That transom is just too wide and the boat is too light and
beamy to make any reasonable progress. But, turn on the motor and
she flies!

Yes Diablo can be quite pleasurable to row. That is if you aren't in to much
of a hurry.

Hello Richard,
Thanks so much for your helpful comments.
I notice with interest your comment about the cabin - is this
something you designed? Sorry to be a nuisance but do you have any
details e.g.size, framing details, etc.
Thanks again
