[bolger] Re: LSME update: Skim coat

FBBB --

4 parts Raka resin, 1 part slow hardener, 1 part fast hardener, glass
until just thin enough to still pour. Worked it back and forth with a
squeegee from Raka. A guy who does this for a living told me, (while
he helped,) that a big piece of formica makes a good, cheap squeegee.

Understand there is still *plenty* of sanding to do -- lots of
wobbles and waves, not to mention a few goops too!

WestSystem 411 is very, very sandable. I used glass fiber because I
wanted the skim coat to be a little tougher, but I will pay for that
when I sand.

My original laminating coat was a mess! A big gop of semi-solid resin
fell on me port topsides, and I couldnt' get it off without
disturbing the glass fabric.

A body grinder makes quick work of sloppy glass work, but you need to
be careful. I had to ruin a few things to get a good touch.

I'm planning on 60, 120, 220 with a random orbital on the skim coat.
I'll post a few before and after pictures.

David

Glad it worked out well. Can you give me some details on this skim
coating process? (mix, tools, techniques?) As you may note by my
recent post, I am getting kind of frustrated with sanding.

FBBB --

I skim coated ('poxy and glass fibers) the scooner Friday afternoon,
just before we headed over to Sag Harbor to look at the vintage
sharpie.

Now that it's hardened up, I'm getting very satisfying at'a'boys from
lay people and real boat builders alike. I really didn't care for the
finish work in lil'winnie, and it shows. But the Raka 4-1-1 mix is
much, much easier to work with than a pot full of smoldering, kicking
polyester. I'm actually LOOKING FORWARD to sanding it out to a smooth
finish. I might even sand between coats of paint. Nothing like a
little success to encourage further effort!

David
