Re: [bolger] Macgregor 26, Not Bolger, but Bolgeresque

A couple of these came on the Florida 120 last weekend. I think they represent a pretty good value for their capability. There are a lot of folks who will deride these boats as ugly and poor sailors, but I'm not one of them. Their owners really like them and seem to get a lot of use and enjoyment from them and that's what matters most. There are boats that sail better than them to be sure, but that's not the point. They are good boats to get "out there" for a few days of R&R.
I have to take exception to your statement "It is 4' longer than FMS but I doubt it has very much more usable space." These boats are HUGE. I've never seen a bigger 26'er, and that includes powerboats. They have lots more useable space than a FMS inclding four dedicated berths, and enclosed head, and a big dinette.
You couldn't build an FMS for the $20,000 a nice used one of these will set you back either. I do think Bolger would approve.

To my knowledge it is not a Bolger design but contains performance elements of Fast Motor Sailer and Martha Jane. Under power, it will shed its water ballast and plane at 20mph with only 60hp. This capability may exceed the Fast Motor Sailer under such modest power. It appears it will sail in a respectable manner per the really fun video provided on the site.

I found one of these for sale on Craigslist in the Chicago area for $13,000. If in good shape, I think that's a lot of capability for the money. A brand new one, loaded is under $30,000, which I find a decent value.

Macgregor describes it in terms similar to Bolger's with regard to its trailerable power and sale ability. To me it is a factory built FMS and its good looking. No I'm not going to tow it behind my Rav4, but an F150 or even a V8 Explorer would get the job done.
