The thing that scares me is welding the 10 gauge or 12 gauge steel
sheet without burn through. (tight enough to hold water). Perhaps some
experienced welders around here could give their opinions about how
difficult a task this would be.

That said, I have had the chance to look very closely at the full
design in detail, building key, etc.. This is an extremely thoughtful
PB&F design, fully considered in every detail! I have no doubt it
would make an excellent long distance (even ocean crossing) single
handed cruising sailboat.
Looking at Bruces superb isometrics I think it would be a fairly easy design to build in steel - this is where you start cultivating your mate with a welder or the local fabrication shop.I've been learning welding over the last few months with this design as a possibility but I think it could be stretched by another 3 feet in the centre section without compromising the design too much(23ft is a critical size for trailering in the UK.Unlike many of PCB's designs it incorporates a reasonable amount of headroom - even for me at 6'7" - and although it was designed as an Ocean crosser I think that it might well suit the £200 millionaire as well. It's small enough to be built in a garden or backyard - although you might have to get a tent if you are mig welding to stop the gas being blown about. You could probably learn enough welding to tack the job together and then hire a professional welder to complete the seams.I can get this done for £10 per hour in the
UK.You don't have the potential problems in Norway that we have with the Recreational Craft Directive in the EEC,unless Norway has it's own bureacratic problems. If you want a bigger design then how about PCB's 'Alaska Trader'.Incidentally does anybody know anything about this one.I know that one has been built and there is a page about it somewhere on the net but I haven't been able to locate it lately.
