Re: Field Mouse/SUPERMOUSE

SUPERMOUSE is one of my favorite designs to drool over.

I have often visited an Icelandic community on the shores of Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba CA, and they at one time had little row boats like that to tend their nets. Except the Icelanders knew how to bent those heavy strakes around and upwards to a pointy bow. They had a shallow solid keel and just poured some concrete into the bottom. Small sprit if the onshore breeze was favorable.

SUPERMOUSE to me has that same sweet hull form. Some lead in the keel like with MICRO, 2 hp motor and that removable topper - what a sweet safe little motorsailor - I expect would draw some attention, and be a nice overnighter for one or two.

Could be strip-planked as well.

Not Fieldmouse, but I built Daily May as described in Tom Hill's book, Ultralight Boatbuilding. That was my first boat, in 1986. It was a tough learning curve but it was a beauty. Wasn't particular pleased with how it paddled though. That doesn't signify much as I knew little about canoes.

Mark,

The portfolio included plans and writeups for Monehegan, Yarrow, Victoria, Field Mouse and a couple of others.  Small Boats added some photographs and another dozen or so designs. The portfolio shpws the lapstrake version of Field Mouse; the book includes photographs of the multi-chine version.

Having recently attended a class on glued plywood lapstrake boatbuilding at the Woodenboat School , I am looking for a small scale project as an exercise in glued lapstrake. My question was has anyone built the lapstrake version of Field Mouse or encountered someone who has?

John,

It's development is ch. 14 ofSmall Boats.

The construction has changed from the original  multichine version, if that's what shown in your portfolio. Otherwise, you have the same boat.

It is ply lapstreak like the later super version. Must have been done in the days before glued clinker was fully proved. The laps are both glued and copper clinch nailed.

Displacement is now 526 pounds. Big, Dutch leeboards instead of the later shallow keel, and with a 74 sq. ft, battened, triangular cat rig.

The lines are very similar to SuperMouse. The bow and stern rocker are slightly less in the longer, newer boat, as would make sense. The body plans look quite similar. Both have the flat floor and firm bilges amidships.

Quoting

"There are plenty of big cruisers with cockpits less comfortable than this one."

"This shape would not be economical in fiberglass as she would not come out of a one-piece mold, which is why she is a better design than most production boats can be."

Need more?
