Re: [bolger] Re: Micro with tabernacle?

Denis,
Wonderful that somebody else likes my interpretation of the Micro. I too am getting on (50) and have to make things as easy as possible, not as supple as I once was. With the cabin door I have kept the cutout square to allow ease of access for my bulk and so the washboards can be placed/removed easily. Although not complete I will be making two washboards that simply fit into a slot on either side. I have just finished my sliding hatch, somewhat different but simple and functional. The bulkhead in front of the cabin has a double layer of 3/8 ply down to about waist height when sitting inside. What I am thinking of doing is closing off the top part of the deck where the mast fits in on the Bolger design and cutting an access hatch through the bulkhead in the cabin. This will mean that I rarely need to go forehead of the cabin.  I will get some more photos soon. I have cut 2 3/4 holes for the portholes, small yes but enough to get a glimpse of what is happening outside. I had some 6mm glass pieces cut out to fit. I also intend to fit a seat joined to the hatchway that will be a permanent position, allowing easy access to both cabin and deck area.

Thanks,

Rod

Rod,
I love what you are doing with the cabin on your Micro. I was going to build a cabin in the Navigator style but I think this is much better for me since you have kept the seating in the cockpit. PLEASE keep the pictures coming! I am wondering what you will do for the cabin door. I will also build a tabernacle, since I am getting too old and too fat to be hoisting anything, so any detail on that aspect will be appreciated as well.

Hello Rod,

I could not find your pic's. Are they in the photo's section? I recently bought a Boldger Micro and the mast seems like it would be a challedge to setup. Tabernacle sounds like a good idea.

Thanks

Any new developments on this? Especially retrofitting one on an existing boat.
I've injured one shoulder and then the other in the last few years, and the boat has stayed on the trailer as a consequence. I'm on the verge of selling it because stepping the mast is not something I can do.

I've read of a "Chinese Gaff" rig that Bolger developed, and somewhere saw that it involved a tabernacle.

Sorry to be so vague, but I've been out of touch.
Thanks, Rosie

Rosie and Rod,
the tabernacle we drew on later improved versions of #422 MICRO is in many ways comparable to the geometry on #486 LONG MICRO and thus should work as drawn.  With a multi-part purchase, or a cheap 12V truck-winch and a switch in your hand, the mast should go up without much drama.  The MICRO plans package has since 1982 grown to 11 sheets including tabernacle details, shorter mast but more sail-area, and much more.  The whole package in on offer for $250.-, likely useful for reference and study to examine suitability of the various upgrades scattered across newer sheets.
