Re: [bolger] Re: PB&F mail address

URL links would likely lead to more actual boats built, which would be the most fitting legacy I could think of.

Joe

Willie,

Some people are just hermits. Some people are engineering types that concentrate intensely. People with both of these traits do the best work but are not “people persons”.  Reading Susan I get the Fullerian engineering vibe. Most techie businesses need an inside guy and an outside guy. All The outsiders that did this for PCB are not doing it today. If I were king I’d order DuckWorks to figure out how to make Susan happy.

Another question to ask yourself is what do you want to leave as your legacy: URL links or signed letters from Phil Bolger, Dynamite and other of your boat heroes?

The problem with the 21st century is that it is very much interrupt-driven. Everyone wants replies now, now, now - and pretty soon you find yourself, as a designer, replying to emails and phone calls and not doing design. Phil saw this trap early on - and never to my knowledge publicized his phone number.

The design of boats is a creative process that requires concentration - being interrupted willy-nilly can destroy this concentration, and greatly increase the time it takes to get a boat design out, or more importantly, getting a boat design right.

So one always contacted PB&F by post or fax - if contacted by post one would generally receive a well thought out letter in reply. This was a wonderful thing - the value of the thought and time and expertise that went into the letter greatly exceeded the wait time to get it. Would you prefer a faster reply that didn't address the question, or gave poorer advice?

Contacting PB&F by fax would generally get a more timely reply - but at their convenience, as they needed uninterrupted concentration to produce the boat designs we admire. Do we want faster service at the price of poorer design?

With Phil's demise, Suzanne needs to decide where to take the business. This is an immensely difficult decision for her, and there are both opportunities and traps at every level, not even considering the burdens of grief that she has been trying to work out of. She has chosen, for the time being, to respect the old model that Phil worked under for so long, which preserves her privacy and her ability to manage her own time to the maximum extent possible. Under the circumstances, these are important considerations.

I have, at this juncture, a practical question. There was a single report on this list that the PO Box 1209 address no longer worked, due to a mix-up at the post office. Suzanne has given out, on this mailing list, an address on Atlantic Street in Gloucester. Has the PO Box situation been resolved? Did it ever even exist? What is the current preferred mailing address for contacting PB&F?

Can save weeks, months in getting started.. As we all get older and dreams happen, again today, there is a boat (not a Bolger) in the local paper being sold by an estate sale, 75% restored, but still, not finished.. So the person who started years ago for their retirement cruise, never got to enjoy the fruits of their labor.. I can count at least 20 boats in the past year started from scratch that have been sold either by the person who started it, being sold from his assisted living bed, or their estate. Just saying they should be easier to access, otherwise people will go elsewhere, and maybe or maybe not, for the same type plans.

Shouldn't we be addressing things to "Susanne Altenberger, Phil Bolger & Friends, P.O. Box 1209, Gloucester, MA, 01930" by this point?

Hi everyone,
What is the e-mail address I have to use for stock plans ordering?
I've tried to get to Susanne through this group but either it doesn't work or she has been off-line in the last couple of weeks.
Thank you
