Just another plug for photos for the Bolger boat calendar project.... I have received some great ones but could use several more to fill out a full year. Thanks!

Thanks, Maximo, but as I would be using an online application for the layout, I am not so sure that I could export the final product as individual images or a .pdf. I will see if that's easy to do, but if not, I would be willing to helo if there are a handful of people that can't order through normal channels. That shouldn't be a big problem as Lulu.com does serve most countries in the world. Cheers, Matthew

I am under no illusions that this will make any money. LIke you, I see it as an enjoyable project to share with the boatbuiding community which has offered me much camaraderie over the years.

You underestimate the amount of work required and overestimate the
profit potential. I do the Annual Columbia Yacht Owners Calendar. I've
done it for about 8 years, basically as a labor of love. The first year
I took orders, made the calendars and then packed them and mailed them
myself. That took a lot of time. The production of the calendar itself
takes a great deal of time. First of all, each and every picture has to
be photo shopped to get the best contrast, cropped and sharpened. In
good years, I'd might have 20 pictures to chose from. I'd end up
printing them out and then Having friends help choose the best ones. The
problem was I always ended up with either too many or too few calendars.
Excess calendars kill any possible profit as they are completely time
sensitive.

In subsequent years, I still did all the photo work but uploaded the
pictures to www.cafepress.com. They are a POD (print on demand) company
that handles everything from the initial ordering accepting credit
cards, printing and shipping. It was the only way I could justify the
process. Even so, the cost meant fewer people actually bought the
calendar. I set the price just high enough over cost to cover printer
cartridges and paper costs. In later years, I also provided a link on my
website, www.captnpauley,com, to a free down-loadable PDF of the calendar.

So the bottom line, do a calendar, it is very satisfying. Just don't
consider it a profit center...

Matthew, great idea. I will send you some photos.

As a suggestion, you could make available your calendar as simple high
resolution image each month. For people not living in USA or EU, you could
avoid international overseas shipping cost, customs cost, money order - pay
online or credit card issues, by printing locally much cheaper.

Even people that do not want to print, could use them as screesaver or
desktop background images.

Thanks, regards, Máximo.
Like that idea.
I have a Defender and a few photos. Could get more if necc.

There seems to be enough interest to move forward with this little project.

If you'd like to contribute one or more photos to please send them to me directly at owlnmole (little e-mail symbol goes here) gmail (dot goes here) com (remove the spaces, of course) with "Bolger calendar photos" as the subject.

Please send images in .jpg format at the largest resolution available, up to about 3600 x 2700 pixels for full-page photos. Lower-resolution photos can be used in corners or inset into a larger pic.

I'll need the photographer's name as it should be credited and, if he/she is not you, I'll need his or her permission to use the picture. For the captions, I'd like as much information as possible, so please send this info for each image:

Photographer's name (as it should be credited):
Boat type (Micro, Teal, etc.):
Boat name (Black Pearl, Beagle, etc.):
Builder's name:
Year built:
Owner's name:
Location of photo:
Year photo taken:
Other notes:

If you have lots of pics, please don't e-mail them all. Either post them to a photo-sharing site and send me a link so I can choose a couple, or send me a .zip file of small thumbnail photos and I can pick that way.

Please send your photos in by Sunday, October 31st so I can get the calendar done in time for everyone to order one for the new year.

Cheers,

Matthew
That is an idea, but to be a moneymaking prospect it needs to be 1) ordered in bulk in advance to reduce the initial cost (which means Susanne or someone would have to fill orders, mail catalogs, etc.); 2)more expensive, to allow some profit margin from the print-on-demand arrangement; and/or 3) of a type and quality to be of interest to retail bookstores, etc. which would also increase the price because of their high markup. I see this as simple project of a group of enthusiasts, not a moneymaking proposition for the moment.

Even at a lower price than was mentioned, it could make a helpful trickle of income for the other important work that is ahead for Susanne, and the profits would be going to a better place than an on-demand publisher. Not that I think this would be a high priority task for Susanne now.

I presume you would be doing the layout?? Paul Esterle who is on this
group does one for Columbia owners, he can offer advice. He has used
Cafe Press in the past but I believe he is shifting everything over to
Lulu.

I got some pics to email you when you get ready. They have to have a
fair amount of pixels, ie phone camera pics won't cut it.
