Re Chico Mendes

Chris,

I remember our common interest in the SBJ boat.

Notice the similarity in hull profiles between this stretched Jim
Michalak AF4 Casa and the Cruiser.

Mark: I corresponded with Mr. Bolger about the "old SBJ Flat Bottomed
Outboard Cruiser" and he stated simply that there wasn't enough interest
to pursue the design. I offered cash on the barrelhead to complete it.

"No thanks."

Then I asked for a few measurements (most angles), saying that I could
build from the few bits of info he'd give me. The response? An
encouragement to design it myself, and call it my own design (with no
specifics; I really only needed that bow stem angle).

So, basically what I decided to do was scale up my Teal. I've taken away
the rig and leeboard, and replaced the forward area with a cabin. I've
trimmed the pointy stern down to a flat transom, and installed an inner
transom to hang an outboard in a covered well.

Only the below-the-waterline hull shape still mimics the Teal, but
that's the most critical component.

I have taken my Teal out with a 1.2hp Tanaka outboard on the gunwale.
The noise was particularly unpleasant, but the little boat scooted
around delightfully, with more than enough power.

That's what put the thought in my head, anyway. I'll look around for
some photos.
