Re: Fwd: Micro rudder
Still laughing....
The ETAP was a dog. It almost turned me off of sailing, until I went out on a friend's SeaSprite 23 and "remembered" what a more traditional boat felt like. Horrible sailing boat. I was flummoxed by it. (High scoring as a live-aboard though)
But... the WHSB was nothing like the one at mystic. This one was apparently built by the top-dog guy, Swift (was it?) in 1905, possibly even Herreshoff, who apparently got in on the racing toward the end of the class (it had high end detailing, what was left of it: frames jogged over the sheer lap, very light scantlings) ,and I think was possibly a racing model. I got it as a shell that had been lightly glassed by Erford Burt in his later years, trying to "save" it. I spent a few months finishing it, side decking, coaming, thwarts, rig, sail, rudder, C.b. It was one of the sweetest sailing boats I've ever been in. It just chuckled through the water and would dust a Beetle Cat, no problem. rolled like a cork downwind though due to big sprit rig. Ultimately it was just too frail and I gave it to the Woods Hole Maritime Museum where it sits to this day in a back room. (Ask them if you can see it sometime)
I will try to dig up photos and scan and post if anybody's interested

"Woods Hole Spritsail boat"!! Really? Such an odd boat, that one (and
not Bolgerian in the slightest, except perhaps for the rig). I had grave
difficulty controlling one when I sailed her (Mystic). But I do love the
ponderous feel of a heavy small boat.
It's hard to imagine a further distance between a WHSB and an etap.
