Re: [bolger] Re: Sneakeasy Inspired?
Hi group, Now a catamaran makes sense and Eric's model tests idea's great. Hope you can find that time you're looking for. Mike

Actually, the round bottom should plane, but would require more horse power. However, it should also be more comfortable in rough water. Although I said pontoon I was really thinking catamaran. If built strongly enough for it's length it could probably handle the lower Chesapeake. At least better that the flat bottomed Sneakeasy. Now a model is a good idea. I need to go to a hobby shop and see what they have in plywood. A couple of feet long should give an idea of the potential. Now, just need some time. :-)

My idea is to take the top of the Sneakeasy from the bow to station 6, adding stations 6's as needed, upgrading the scantlings and making the top the bottom. Really, look at Boats with and Open Mind or Instant Boats with Dynamite Pearson and see if the bow's top doesn't look like it would make a great pontoon bottom.

Have you ever watched a pontoon boat go? Not efficient. Not the sort of thing to emulate. The origins of pontoon boats were no doubt some leftover something or other, add a sort of pointy end and call that forward. Join two for stability and go cheap. Might even have been surplus pontoon bridge pontoons.
First try a quick and dirty experiment. Two model pontoon boats. one with sneakeasy upside down and the other right side up. Weight them equally fashion a yoke with one fastened to one end and the other to the other end. Then see which has more drag. Pull fast enough to get up on plane. Oh, the round bottom one probably won't. Does that mean it is not a fair test?

Hi Sirdarnell, Why yes, It's as you say and I think you should do this immediately if not sooner. Sanity, what's that. Mike

Am I crazy? I keep looking at Sneakeasy's turtle-backed and think "Wow, that's make a nice pontoon hull." My idea is to take the top of the Sneakeasy from the bow to station 6, adding stations 6's as needed, upgrading the scantlings and making the top the bottom. Really, look at Boats with and Open Mind or Instant Boats with Dynamite Pearson and see if the bow's top doesn't look like it would make a great pontoon bottom.
