Re: Bolger Scow Schooner thread on WoodenBoat forum

Unfortunately, I wasn't an MAIB subscriber until a few months later. It would be great if somebody would scan the article and upload it to the cartoons group.

Pete Culler designed a Periauger Scow, 32x10', two gaff sails on masts of equal height. This is a real beauty. He designed it for himself but never got it built. His widow withheld the plans but it is possible that it is available now. See it in John Burke's book, Pete Culler's Boats. If you are at all serious about small boats then this should be in your library. It will show you much about the beauty in his mostly traditional designs. Much to learn about the little extra touches that make his boats so easy on the eyes.

I always wanted to see the 36-footer with the full length house mentioned at the end of the BWAOM chapter. Anyone ever see that design?

There are two Bolger designs named "Scow Schooner". The one initially
published in Small Boat Journal V#44 Aug/Sept1985 as "Cartoon 20"
which later became the chapter in the book Boats with an Open Mind,
and the one published May 15th 2001 in MAIB V19#1, which is the 35ft x
11'8" (Design #501) called the Live-on-Board Scow Schooner.

Devlin has plans for a smaller (20’) scow called Lichen. It’s not Bolger and it’s not a schooner, but it looks like a workable scow cruiser.

That's always been a design that I loved (or, cartoon), and I wrote him about it when I ordered Defender plans. Here's his response (posted on Woodenboat forum as well)
"The scow never went beyond the preliminary study. Too bad in a way but I'm not really comfortable with as short a range of stability as that any more."

Make of it what you will. I discouraged me for a while, but I think as a fair weather, shallow water summer home, nothing could be better.

There's an on-going thread on the Scow Schooner (from the Small Boats
Cartoon series and BWAOM)
in the Design/Plans forum.

Bruce Hallman, do I recall that you had done a Freeship rendering of
this cartoon? If so, if it is still accessable on the Web, could you
post a link to it in that WB thread. If it's too much trouble, don't
bother.

I've always found that cartoon attractive.

Thanks,
