Re: Catalina 22 Keel Repair

Try catalina22.org. They have a wealth of information. Also a great article in Sailing magazine a couple of years ago on what usually needs doing on an older C 22.
Good luck

Keel pin repair is a standard job on an older swing keel C-22.

Please take this in the spirit it's given--you've come to the wrong
place for help. There is a huge network of C-22 owners, they are a
delightful lot, and helpful as can be.

I was a member of the C-22 owner's group back before the internet,
before the web (but not before email, so the 1980's). There were
newsletters, a magazine, email groups, and so on. There must be a Yahoo
group, too.

The real issue with keel repair is almost always the keel itself.
Softer, more rust-prone iron is used for the keel (about 250kgs), and
the hole for the pivot tends to grow. What people usually do is take the
keel off, sandblast and coat it (many options), and often they put a new
sleeve (steel tube) into the hole for the pivot (before the recoat, of
course).

You can read *endless* accounts of these in various places, and I
strongly recommend you tap into the C-22 experience and knowledge.

As Susanne has pointed out, when a boat has one serious issue, it's
likely to have others. Your best bet is a thorough survey by a certified
surveyor. While the Bolger community sometimes has a negative attitude
toward surveyors (because the boats are either too small, or outside the
experience of many surveyors who then misunderstand them), this attitude
should NOT apply in the case of C-22. A good survey can save your life,
as well as save many, many dollars and hours of grief.
While you are at it, I'd examine everything and stuff you have not thought of yet to give her a good going-over/'physical' while she's at the shop/'doctor's...  Then you mind will be at ease.  Looking/checking typically is not thast costly.  Good luck finding the best shop.

Good suggestion. I know someone who did some small work as a rebuilt the trailer. Advice please: This boat has been on a trailer for 11 years unused. Should I assume the rusty pitted keel has not affected the stainless bolt/pivot are or assume it has ?

Sounds like moderate-to-midsize metal working shop (with plasma cutters, large brakes, welding routines, medium-size forklift/gantry for in-house materials-handling that matches the project's weight) would do.  This is less of a 'boat-job' and more of a metal-working venture with these shops often doing odd cutting/welding/custom-fitting jobs, be on road-going vehicles or delivered structures.  This might be easier than you think.  Just look at their equipment for rated capacity and sound them out for willingness to 'clog' their workflow with your boat.  In this economy many may be accommodating...

Mark and I are looking for a firm that can lift a Catalina 22 (3,100 lbs) off the trailer, lower the 560 lb keel, precisely drill the keel pin hole out, and then produce (purchase) the appropriate size pin and shims for replacement.  Previous experience a huge plus.

An added bonus would include having a warm covered spot for me to paint the hull while it is off the trailer.

Any ideas?
