Re: Bolger design No. 400

Yes, but before the thread got going, I said that BOLGER meant the
bit
about smooth water, ie. smooth water necessary to carry 1000 lbs! Not
a general statement.

Hi,

I've had a June Bug for 5 seasons, using it as a tender to get out to
my Chebacco which is moored 100 yards from shore in the Tay Estuary.
She handles a chop pretty well - slams a lot, but gets there just the
same. So - I respectfully beg to differ regarding her use being
restricted to flat water.

I picked June Bug as a tender because of her tremendous stability,
and her long waterline length with gives good rowing speed.

My only gripe with June Bug is that when she's so heavily loaded (or
badly trimmed) that her forefoot gets submerged, she tends to shear
around a lot.

Regarding smooth water -- I have used a friend's June Bug. It is definitely
for harbor use. As I vaguely recall from one of the Instant Boat books, it
was originally sketched as a mooring tender.

That's June Bug, which you can find at www.instantboats.com and in
one
of Payson's Instant Boat books, I think the second one, also
available at the site. The book contains a lot of info on this boat
(as well as others).

When he says smooth water, I think he really means it.

In reply to a query about payment methods for the MJ upgrades, and a
query about the price of the plans for "Bee" for the future son in
law, Mr Bolger kindly replied and recommended a few different plans
as alternatives. One that had me interested were the plans for his
design No. 400, which apparently is a Tortoise stretched to 14 feet,
with a sharp bow. It apparently is a fast rower, weighs in at 100
lbs, and can carry 1000lbs in smooth water.
Does anyone know anything about this design? I can't see it
in "Boats with an Open Mind". Any feedback would be appreciated,
don't want to pester Mr B too much. (I'm no tyre kicker)
