Re: Finishing Spars Bright
I had a wood sloop for many years. Built in Netherlands in
the 50's. Spar varnish kept the mast and boom looking
great. On my wood ladders I use boiled linseed oil. It does
a fine job of protecting the wood also.

Epoxy makes the surface more abrasion and ding resistant. I have my mast
coated with epoxy, and have yet to see any wood fibers where the gaff, boom,
and partner rub.

Yes, and it does fine. However, I don't coat spars with epoxy ever.
It's just too messy with no real benefit that I can see. I seal the
the wood first with Interlux 206 (?) sealant and then put a couple of
coats of varnish over it. The sealant/varnish combination seems to
work fine for protecting the wood from water and sun.
The Interlux sealant is good stuff for priming bare wood surfaces. It
is a thin, resinous liquid that is easily applied and soaks into the
wood easily. It isn't too expensive either.

John,
Ever put the Z-Spar over epoxy? Good results?

FBBB --
I think I'd like to use a transparent finished on the masts, boom,
and gaffs for the Margaret Ellen. I'm a little confuzzled by the
array of oils, varnishes and *thanes out there.
