TV sailing commercial
Hi Folks, There is a link Below that goes to a TV commercial I worked on
while in Florida 1988. I helped build a Pora that turned out to be a
catamaran. The pora was a fiberglass canoe covered in bondo. The
outriggers were a piece of tubing with the ends plugged and covered in
bondo as well. My wife made the sail from children's kindergarten nap
time bamboo mats sewn together. We cut a hole in the sail and sewed it
back with a fine weak thread so it would blow out from the storm we
made. A trash incinerator pit was cleaned and painted and we put about
4ft of water in it. A crane lifted and dropped a 40ft x 4ft x 5 inch
thick concrete slab to make waves about ever 8 seconds. An air boat was
parked at the edge of the12 ft deep pit and pointed at the sailboat. He
blew up a storm and huge 24 inch pipes dumped water splashing around the
little sailboat. Then we took the little boat and the actor out into
the Gulf stream and shot some video of the boat sailing. Sailed pretty
good to everyones surprise especially with bamboo sails. The film was
edited and with the walls of the pit painted blue a computer was told to
add in the sky that was on another film where the blue was. A fellow in
Richmond Va. built the space pod and we put lighting in it and I built a
mechanical dimmer switch. Gave a nice futuristic look to the dimming of
the lights and lighting.
Before we started I went looking for a wave maker and found out it
would take 8000 horse power to make six ft.waves. We used the crane
instead and waves about a foot and a half at best. Looked okay though.
I took about and hour of video about the making, but on my boat in
moisture all the video stuck together so I lost all of it.
This video does not belong to me. I will leave it up on U-Tube as
private and only those that have the link will be able to see it. I'll
take it down in about a week. You might have to copy and paste the link?
I thought this might be of interest. Wish I had the video I took as
that belongs to me. Doug
