Don't forget a high aspect lug.  Comparable to a run of the mill modern rig with a much lower COE, until you add in all the high-tech racing gear.

Don't dismiss a single square sail as only suitable for downwind work.It won't be as good as the gaff or marconi rigs but I've been on a Humber Keel which was acheiving very respectable results into the wind.
