We are interested in building a Bolger Champlain, we really like the
concept. We would like to see one first, and talk to a builder/owner
about the pros and cons of the boat. Are there out there in the
eastern part of the US? Thanks in advance. Nelson Gardner

Here's a link to my photos of a very nice example of a Champlain taken at the Kingston, Ontario messabout in 2003.

HI PETER -

OK - TELL YOU WHAT - IF YOUR GOING TO THE MESSABOUT AND WILL TAKE SOME PICTURES OF VAN PELTS "CHAMPLAIN" SHOWING THE INTERIOR LAYOUT AND THAT EXTENDING DOUBLE BERTH (GOTTA POST THEM FOR ALL TO SEE) I'LL SEND YOU THE PRICE OF A CASE OF "MAUDITE" TO TAKE WITH YOU.
I'M REALLY STARTING TO FEEL BAD THAT I CAN'T GET AWAY TO DRIVE UP FROM FT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA TO ATTEND THE MESSABOUT. THEY CALL THIS AREA OF FLORIDA "THE GOLD COAST" SO YOU KNOW WITH ALL THE CONDOMINIUMS AND HIGHRISES ALONG THE COAST WE'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO HAVE A MESSABOUT HERE, BUT WHEN MY WIFE BARBARA AND I BUILD OUR "CHAMPLAIN" THE MASTER PLAN IS TO MOTOR UP THE INTERCOASTAL TO LONG ISLAND SOUND TO SPEND TIME WITH OUR KIDS AND WHO KNOWS, WHY NOT A TRIP UP THE HUDSON WHICH I UNDERSTAND (I HOPE) MAKES A CONNECTION TO THE ST LAWRENCE - SEE YA.

Someone wrote:(Sorry but I forget who)
"Ask Hector or
Peter to
check for details although they may ask you for cases of beers in
their reply!
(One for each of course)"

One case(24 bottles) each of Maudite?,I've just looked that up on the WWW and found out that its 8% alc/Vol.Thats pretty strong for a production beer.A case each of that and unless they are alcoholics with a high tolerance to alcohol they'd be just about comatose for the entire Messabout if they got through that amount in an afternoon!!!!
I once had a few batches of a home brew labelled "British Mild",and it was certainly anything but mild!!! With a hydrometer test it was just nudging 11% Alc/Vol and I can tell you that after 6 (750ml) Bottles you really knew that you'd had it,literally,if you could remember!!My brother said that after the second bottle he got a buzzing feeling all over, which he's never before or since experienced with alcohol. It must have been the impurities in it?! or maybe it was good 100% pure Tasmanian rainwater in the brew having some special effect!!?It really tasted very good, especially for a Dark Ale,even at room temperature straight out of the cupboard.
Seriously though, everyone's all eager about the "Champlain / Windemere"(Did Swallows & Amazons have anything to do with the name?)designs, which are basically displacement speed craft and arguably very good and interesting for the type of boats that they are and much more desirable than any plastic mass produced boat.
But does anybody know anything about "Retreiver",very similar to "Champlain" but a planing hull as far as I've discovered.Has anybody got any details or pictures, not that I'm going to build one(yet anyway)as I've got another project or two in mind first, but I'm just interested.

The hull speed of my 2250 lb, 22' sailboat (20' lwl) is about 6.5
knots. In calm water, it will exceed 5+ kts with a 5hp ob. It would
probably do more if the propeller was carefully chosen. So, it sounds
to me like the 9.9 is all the power that it makes sense to put on a
Champlain.

Quoting from the MAIB article about Champlain...

"With her minimum of 52 gallons of gas, she has ample range with her
9.9 Yamaha four-stroke high thrust power. According to Yamaha, she
should get at least one gallon per hour at full throttle; I.E. 7
knots allowing a range that would be around 350 nautical miles, or
much more if the throttle is eased somewhat because the boat can't go
as fast as the motor would like to push it."...

"Indeed, key to this whole concept of a 22-foot cruise is the very
moderate four-stroke 10hp outboard pushing in miserly fashion with it
low-geared 11 3/4 inch propeller a well-shaped displacement hull
which can carry with very clean wave pattern all the necessitites
that make for real cruising independence..."

"With her modest power plant locked outside aft along with her fuel
supply, she will be almost as quiet as an auxiliary under sail. As a
matter of practical experience, she will cover distances at a
continuous six knots, faster than sailboats of comparable comforts at
a fraction of their first and maintenance costs, not to mention
marina fees and their characteristic loss of overland mobililty as
compared to Champlain's moderate trailering length and weight."
I seem to recall 6 or 6.5 knots cruising speed and a little over 7
knots wide open.

Does anybody know or remember the speed of a Champlain with the
Yamaha
9.9 High Thrust?
New to your group.

Have received the same suggestion from PB&F recently, but unable to
locate owner or serious comments.
Does this new request will raise some reactions? Fortunately,
St Laurence River estuary is generally less brutal than what you
describe. I still think Champlain will be interesting to build. CIAO

Those with a good memory may recall my quest for a small
plywood diesel cruiser. I wrote to PB&F about it, and their
suggestion was Champlain.

Champlain... I don't know. It looks like a houseboat, doesn't
it?

I can't help wondering about Champlain's capabilities in open
waters. We have a _sea_ here, not a river or an ICW. A few nautical
miles out, the wave height may easily be 2 or 3 meters (7 to 10
feet); the all-time high, not too far away, is 6m (20').

Would a Champlain owner comment?

Thank you,
