Re: [bolger] Costs
Trailer:
Old power boat trailer - $175
steel for stretching trailer - $65
New tires/wheels - $100
winch - $15
bearings - $20
shocks - $40
lights - $15
(borrow welder, learn to weld, coat with leftover house paint) (sure nice to
drysail in non-salt water...)
--------------------------
Total: $430
Sails:
$308, delivered, Sailrite custom designed, 125sq ft gaff rig.
I spent around $2000 on mine, with no lead for a keel.
I stand by my estimate of $2500 to $3500 for a "middle of the road" Micro,
LM, or MJ.

Actual costs so far (going whole hog, lot's of epoxy, glass, and BS1088 Okume
plywood (beautiful, so nice to work with, never a void....)
$20 glue, clamps
$40 fir for sprits
$45 spruce for masts
$1000 plywood ($64 sheet, 15 sheets of 3/8's (double bottom)
$600 epoxy ($200 for 6 gallons, plus all extras and 30 yards 4 ounce glass for
the whole boat)
$40 Silicon bronze screws (hey, it's my boat, I want good, cool, square drive
screws <grin>
$80 doug fir (misc)
future costs expected
$30 more fir for misc
$100 paint
$700 sails (sailrite)
$1000 Nissan new 4stroke 4horse outboard
$500 - $1000 for trailer
plus safety gear, bumbers, VHF, etc.
I'll be sailing in San Francisco Bay, so want a very sturdy boat with highly
reliable outboard just in case.
Total comes to around $4000 or so, give or take a little. Plywood, amount of
epoxy/glass, outboard, and trailer seem like areas to shave some costs off that,
certainly doable for $2500 considering you can pick up used trailers very cheap,
and 2 stroke outboards in this size go for around $300.
Hey, I used to race motorcycles, so building a boat fo $4,000 really doesn't
sound too bad, when in a season of racing you'd go through over $1000 in just
tires, not to mention race gas @ $4.25/gal ;-)

Anyone with firsthand experience give me a clue of costs in America
for building the Micro, Long Micro, or Martha Jane if using middle of
the road materials, epoxy, and lead?
