Why not just painted Okoume? You'll sve yourself a boatload of money, weight, time and sanding if you abstain from epoxy coating your GLD - with no unpleasant consequences.
Meranti is going to be heavier and stiffer, in any case, though reportedly more rot resistant in the long term.

Occume plus an epoxy coating will be lighter than uncoated meranti. You can also save weight by using cedar for chines and frames, as well as leaving the bow and stern thwarts out.
