Harry, I hate to spend money on top quality tools too. I made an
exception buying my Bosch 1587 jig saw, and can say that because of
the incredible smooth cuts that possible with this low-vibration saw,
that I don't regret the $179 cost. Also, the tool free blade change
is real sweet.

I am very happy with my heavy duty porter cable. It has quick-change blade (just pinch a very stout spring clip), adjustable angle, very good blade support (no wiggle or bend), and power to spare. I like Bosch (original imported swiss Bosch scintilla saws were best but B of America is still pretty good) but it doesn't have the value or quality it once did.
Here is the saw I have, not cheap but should have many many hours worth of service life. Mine was not made in China, but is about 15 yrs old, I think from someplace odd like Transylvania. Not sure where they are made now...Only one left:
http://www.amazon.com/Porter-Cable-9543-Amp-Top-Handle/dp/B0000222YV
One reviewer says it blows sawdust in his eyes. Huh. I never had that problem. I guess he does not wear eye protection or glasses like me. It does a pretty good job of blowing the dust away from the cut line. I think maybe they had that in mind...
Another wag says the blade release gets hot. He is pushing too hard. Change the blade when it gets dull. I have never had that problem either. Funny.
I can't believe how long the real Bosch blades last, still sharp after 100s of feet of cutting fir(ish) ply.
If it broke I'd buy it again if I could find it. If I thought I'd burn it up, I'd buy a spare now, but I really doubt I ever will wear it out.
I just wish they made the bayonette blades shorter, to make plunge cuts easier.

I just yesterday recommended the Bosch to someone
else. Just like Dennis said "smooth as butter". And you can't beat
the blade changing system. I've had one for longer than I can remember and
it gets a lot of use, not just for boat building. I have the top handle
model, but if I were to do it again (and I would if this one bit the dust) I
would consider the barrel grip model. I think if it allows for more subtle
directional changes.
Keep that sawdust coming.

I vote Bosch, best jig saw made far as I'm concerned... smooth as butter.

Once in a while I take him something that is not fixable. He doesn't charge anything for taking it apart and checking to see whats wrong it if you give it to him if it can't be fixed. He uses some of the parts that are still good. If anyone wants to give him a try I'll post his name and address. He is absolutely honest to a fault. If he uses a used part he will tell you so and the price for the part is reduced.

Harry, I recommend Bosch. I have one and it changed how I thought about
jigsaws. Can't remember offhand which model but I love it...
