Re: [bolger] mizzen and stuff

Gregg,
I think you have an amazingly great idea there. I'm forever grateful to you
for helping me dabble in the previously mysterious art of boat design, and to
extend that into the fun of sail design ("real" sails and not just poly tarp
and tape creations) would be even better.
As in boats I've discovered that as quick and easy as a poly sail is, the
bulk of the investment of course is the labor. If the dacron investment could
be kept reasonable, I don't know of anyone who has made a couple of poly tarps
(and watched them gradually [rapidly?] deteriorate) who wouldn't prefer to have
a real dacron sail for their labors.
So I don't know what you need from us to encourage this project, but let us
know and we'll send it along.
Thanks again.

David,

I've been dabbling with the idea of keeping some general-purpose Dacrons on
hand and plotting or cutting from the sail shareware. That way, we could
all become sailmakers and sail designers.

I would probably also want to keep some UV thread, grommets, etc. on hand.
Eventually, we would probably develop a web page with designs (shapes)
cataloged for downloading/reference.

Not to start another war, but I toyed around with the idea for a while with
the cheap tarps, etc. but convinved myself that even the lowest form of
Dacron is far superior in sailing performance. I even built a tension
tester and found all the plastic stuff 3 times stretchier. However, having
easy access to a program and a plotter/cutter would even make these lots
better.

I do need to research the prices though but I don't think it needs to be
that expensive.

Richard-
Congrats on your new sail.
Gregg, I'd definitely be interested in having some sail patterns made.
Let me know what it might cost either right on dacron, or on mylar or
some other pattern like stuff. I bet a bunch of us sail making dabblers
might be interested.
Thanks,
David
