Re: [bolger] Re: Facebook
Hello Daniel from Oz.
There has not been this level of ‘excitement’ on design-work recently...
In regards to space-constraints, Phil lived on RESOLUTION for 13 and us together aboard her for 5 years - all seasons, including frozen in saltwater-ice – with distinct limitations on Phil’s onboard library.

Today with all the handy gadgets on hand, one immediate option in
space-constrained circumstances is
- to subscribe to the magazines,
- thus support producers and seasoned/trusted compilers/editors of such work,

- scan your favorite pieces to your favored storage-device,
- to then pass the magazine on to your local Public or School library,
Senior Home etc.
- Occasionally, you’d keep a full issue, say 1 every year to retain the fingers-on-paper feel...
Not sure though whether the subscription becomes a charitable donation and thus becomes tax-deductible ?!

Subject:[bolger] Re: Facebook
Wow, what an active discussion. A few cents from me down here in Australia.
- One of the other yahoo groups I am on has recently started to migrate across to groups.io (https://groups.io/). Apparently it is setup to allow migration of the message archives, etc, and provides a similar email based list server format. I'm not sure what the issues are with Yahoo (it has been working fine for me), but I believe that some of the concerns are around whether Yahoo groups will continue to be provided as a service.
- While I love books, I am unfortunately somewhat space constrained and so these days I am trying to reduce my book and magazine purchasing habit. Fortunately, more and more of the publications I like are selling e-editions, typically as a PDF that preserves the print layout (and that you could print at home if you wanted to for specific articles). Some of them watermark the PDF with your name and the order number in small, light grey text at the bottom of each page. This allows them to be distributed without DRM (i.e. the stuff that Susanne referred to that can "wipe" your e-library without your consent) while still providing a mechanism for publishers to prosecute if unauthorised redistribution occurs. As an example, I note that BDQ is now available in PDF format.
- A number of other people who produce regular content that I read and enjoy are using Patreon to provide the cashflow to support that (www.patreon.com). This allows you to pledge regular (per piece or per month) small contributions to these creators. The donations can be quite small (often $1 to $2) but across a few supporters, they add up to a reasonable income stream.
- Preservation of information over time is not a matter of what format the information is in (print or electronic) but requires a person (archivist) to take actions to preserve that information. Whether that is providing suitable storage for books, maintaining multiple copies in different to preserve against the risk of fire, and moving digital copies on to new media as technology progresses.

Even my own 'messages' are continuously repeated BACK TO ME as 'Messages' and 'Notices'. . . . NOW I can't get rid of it !!
c) If Yahoo 'Groups' is in so much trouble - why haven't I ever heard about it?
