A personal experience....commissioned a design from PB&F, -I believe in
2002. Had a phone call, ; couple, maybe three letters and 2 more phone
conversations...then nothing..absolutely nothing. Paid a deposit of $500
(USd) to begin.
<snip>

I have several plans for smaller, 'standard' Bolger designs. I did not get
these direct from Phil, but from Dynamite. While I haven't had any telephone
conversations, a couple of letters have been exchanged. No problems there -
perhaps BECAUSE they were 'older, established, designs'.

That being said . . . I DO have experience with 'DESIGN CONTRACTS' for
highly technical equipment. To me, anything that has a 'deposit' {or
obligation} for more then $25 REQUIRES some form of 'Contract' or written
Documentation. {When I recently bought a USED motorcycle from a 'Craig's
List' advert - I wrote up a short 'Letter of Intent' with all the known
details, etc. before I even physically looked at the bike. Afterwards, I
made notes on BOTH copies, gave one to the owner, and we countersigned both.
Simple.}

IF ALL the 'complaints' are relatively similar to your
experience(s) -relatively recent {in the last years of Phil's life,
preceding a long history of pleasant & fruitful dealings- then that is a
strong indicator of his mental decline. While it wouldn't have changed your
last exchange, it would have made a recovery from the Estate {or
Corporation} easy. In fact, following up on it may have indicated there WERE
DIFFICULTIES a lot sooner, so the entire 'unpleasantness' could have been
avoided.
