Re: Sweet lined skiff

Yes. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Here's his littleTortoisesized punt that's hard to resist.
Thanks for the Smithsonian flag.

I’ve done copy stand copies of some things by out of business companies where the technical information was never available in anything other than the original printed material. In this case we have a copyright holder and she gets to decide what happens.

Bob Hicks of Messing About in Boats has stated that he does not want his material made available so there is only a limited index on line.

Susanne if you read this please comment one way or the other on your position. Do you have plans to republish the books? If not, under what conditions would you permit someone or some company to digitize Phil’s writings and make them available again.

Many of the lines plans in Sucher's books are striking and graceful,
especially the skiffs and punts, but I haven't heard of many being built
-- except for his light dory which seems to have a good reputation. It
certainly isn't the looker that the Goucester Gull is but is wider on
the bottom and has more initial stability.

The Smithsonian sells larger scale copies of the plans in the two
_Simplified Boatbuilding_ books. They're catalogued in the Ship Plan List:

And, there is an active group of individual hackers devoted to
scanning books. The process is easily and cheaply available to anyone
with a little incentive, and a digital camera.

See here,

Looking through digital images to replace a few aging  xeroxes taken from Sucher'sSimplified Boat Building, came across this.

Google is on a project to digitize all the books in the world. They have been making deals with libraries to do the entire library. I’m sure they have some office that deals with getting permission from copyright holders and may be able to give you guidance. They have been going too far without permission and have now realized they need to do more with the copyright holders. The beauty of this approach is that the copyright holders don’t have to do anything if they agree to let Google do it. If there are no plans to re-publish these books this might be a good way to go. Amazon also makes deals with copyright holders to print books to order in which case those copyright holders get paid something.

Schorpioenis available from Susanne.  I bought a copy last year.  Good yarn.

Amazon offers a print on demand service. There are a couple of publishers that pursue an ethic that is parallel to that in PHB's work. Lindsay's Books (http://www.lindsaybks.com/) strikes me as a solid possibility, although their style is a bit more brash.

I would love to see someone show up with a completed Bolger boat at one of the MakerFaires. Technology for cutting precise 2D shapes (laser cutters, CNC routers) has fallen dramatically in price and become widely available over the last ten years... boats that go together quickly from a pile of flat pieces are a really obvious fit to that technology.

Y’know, at the prices that all of Bolger’s books now out-of-print are selling on eBay or Amazon, Susanne should look into re-publishing them….

There seems to be a small but enthusiastic market for them.  Justifies “boutique” or “vanity-press” printing of small lots, or even one-off computer-printing only on order (somebody offers this, I vaguely remember from other projects)

Would also make a delightful book (or three) to re-publish all the MAIB articles (with bob Hicks’ permission, of course….)

Susanne, are you listening????

LuLu does this and has a good rep, Paul Esterle on this list uses it to publish his books.

There might be copy write issues with the original publishers.

Kotick was designed by Phil Bolger for Phil Bolger, and just guessing,
he was about 5ft9in/160lbs. I built a Kotick, and me being
6ft0in/200lbs I find Kotick just a bit snug, but it still is great for
me.

Plans for Kotik are in Small Boats. Edey & Duff made some fiberglass copies of Kotik. Dynamite Payson built the prototype. PCB used Kotik a lot and seemed happy with her.
does anyone know how much weight Kotick was designed to carry? Were there ever any type of plans drawn ? TIA guys
