Re: Tyson on Schooner on ebay etc.
The suggestion to move the light engine forward is a recurrent theme. Have any other designers done that?

It wasn't me that brought up the idea that I shouldn't be boating if I didn't want to loose money on boats. All I was doing was replying to that comment.
A couple of years ab go a boat was advertised on line her Name was Cats Paw. She was abeautiful glss over plywood ketch. I really liked her. He asked $30,000 for her. I felt that at my age I should not finance a boat on a fixed income. I had $20,000 in cash . I told him that if she is what he said she is I would give him that for her in cash. After a couple weeks he called me and said he would take $22,000 for her and finance the $2000. I told I him no, but the offer was standing untill he either sold her for more or came don to my price. A guy from Chile offered him $29,500 and he sold the boat. All I am saying is $12,000 or $20,000 is to much to risk without getting surveys and following proper buying procedures to insure that the good deal really is a good deal.
I am perfectly capable of surveying a boat to determine it's condition and and I could do one for you for nothing. I would never do one for myself. OF course if I did one for you when it comes time to insure yourboat it would be worth exactly what I charge you for it.:-) Doug

MY method of buying a boat is first I have to like her. The seller usually has and asking price. I ask him what is wrong with her. What ever he tells me I figure what it is going to cost me to fix her including a value for my labour. That is deducted from our tentatively agree on price. So now we have a new price. I then have the boat surveyed at my expense. The surveyor gives me his report and I deduct the estimates the yard gives me on making the repairs to that I add 20% for a small proffit on the work. After all why should I rebuild a boat if I can't make anything on the work? The seller is welcome to do the work that needs to be done if he figures my price is wrong.
This insures that I get a boat at a price that is right in her present condition. I have the failing of falling in love so might overlook her faults. This method is to protect me from my own lust not to hurt the buyer. If I can't do this I don't buy. The seller has to be able to document the engine hours. I have a compression check done and oil sample tested if I can't prove the engine is good then I figure its worth about $1000 as spare parts or an engine to rebuild.
I have used this method 3 times over the years and two of them I was not able to buy the boat which was heart breaking as I was really in lust. The boat I bought needed a lot of repair but I was very happy with her. I did the repairs sailed her about five years and sold he at a small profit but likely really lost a little money taking inflation into account.

Its a good thing I didn't see this before the sale ended. I might have been foolish enough or smart enough to buy it. I'll probably put $12,000 into necessary improvement to ROGUE. Such beauty. How could this boat not immediately sell at $12000?!? When I think of all the ads from eager young people wanting to buy an inexpensive boat to sail around the world in... May this schooner find an appreciative owner. Its worth $12,000 as a beautiful sculpture, far, far more as the functional boat it is.

What ever he tells me I figure what it is going to cost me to fix her including a value for my labour. That is deducted from our tentatively agree on price. So now we have a new price. It's funny but when we decided to build our Jessie Cooper "Loose Moose" Just about everybody we knew advised against building her as being such an "odd" boat we'd never get our money back when/if we decided to sell it.
We lived on the first Loose Moose for nearly six years and it allowed us to sail around Europe and when we weren't sailing to reside in an area outside Paris for the princely sum of $50 a month saving us thousands and thousands of dollars in rent.
The savings of being able to live on our Loose Moose were actually what it cost us to have Phil design and build our Loose Moose 2 so in a way Loose Moose paid for our next boat as well as saved us thousands of dollars on rent and all. Plus if you factor in the just plain enjoyment (and what exactly is the dollar value of days that will resonate with enjoyment as memories for the rest of your life?) so the actual cost of a boat is a somewhat complicated bit of higher math.
As it happens when we sold our first Loose Moose to a young Frenchman who'd become a friend while we were building LM2 for $1. we felt we'd made quite the profit in the deal... and, knowing that our first Loose Moose was in good hands that would take care of her and show her the respect it deserved was more than happy making...
Boats are never just about condition, dollars and cents.

The canals of Europe have a very low speed limit, none of this dimwitted high speed, big damaging wake stuff like in the USA. While I won't like more expensive gas any more than anyone else, it is inevitable, and not something any politician, of any party, on any level can do about it. The problem is GREED, and that is not something a government can control without becoming a dictatorship.

I eventually plan to live aboard a vessel, and travel the world on the cheap. That's right, using boat bums as part of the labor for maintenance as I go. Could she be single handed? Would she hold up well over years of regular sailing? Or, would the eventual "bottom refastening" be something that wrecks an otherwise pristinely maintained craft? Not that I can necessarily make such a purchase at this time, but....Damn, I see her lines, and I want to.

Just want to say that your family has become a part of the Bolger legend
in my view. Some of the nicest "home" builds I could ever imagine. I
always thought about going to Taz one day, but not sure I can make it
now.
Hope we don't completely lose touch with your latest project. Any chance
of getting a blog going or a build log on WB group?
Also hoping your father is well. He has been through a lot in his day -
including putting up with you and Dominic:-)
I also enjoyed the "old days" of the ongoing high energy this group used
to have. The term "fuddy duds" comes to mind for some reason.
Cheers!

Beautiful shape, promising balances despite unusual shape, interesting drive-train, but dead-problematic idea of un-modified automotive power-plant too high in the hull since it would need to be self-draining... The improved marinized engine version will become part of the MAIB series like everything else so far across some 430-440 installments now.
I'll put a copy of the study in the mail.

Would make a fine yarn though, since the schooner was built at Story's in Essex, was sailed by Phil for a few, to then end up in the Southern Hemisphere in good hands.
Once you've disposed of those 8000 miles, planning on taking her through 'the Horn' and then north for a Bolger get-together in Gloucester would seem almost 'matter-of-course'...
As I was saying, oh well...

Wind in the Southern Hemisphere will be predominantly from the SW, so I get the idea that the actual sailing route looks more like 8000 miles...
That's only a couple of months at an average on 6 knots 24 hours a day with no stops and wind all the way...

Phil did advocate shallow-draft but also...
And that is what a lot of folks have talked about in this forum - however 'uninspiring' to some - , reflecting Phil's highly-evolved definition of shallow-draft-at-sea. 'Leopard' at least once came to Gloucester and she is what she is.
The reason why these 'period'-derived flavors get designed by a few is because Phil explicitly chose not to - after some early experimenting and much subsequent thought. That shallow-draft 'market-segment' is apparently being filled now...
Worthwhile studying: South-West Pacific Inter-Island Motor-sailing Trader SIR JOSEPH BANKS, drawn to 90'+ length and still under 4' of hull-draft. Butshe is high-sided enough to allow taking super-shallow draft to sea, as confirmed by an Australian 'Second Opinion' on her decades ago.
A full-scale Mid-Atlantic Coast Schooner Replica came to town last summer, tall rig, low sides, shallow, and (painfully) obvious why new-built 1:1-scale 'Pride-of-Baltimore' was lost 'suddenly', albeit tragically predictably so. That visiting vessel last summer will never be exposable to the average East-Coast range of conditions without a weary eye on the weather, early-on reducing sail, and starting the engines.... Even with full-time seasoned crews, these geometries proved 'challenging', incl. 'sisterships' attempted for fishing out of Gloucester, with some built, owned, sailed, lost by one branch of Phil's ancestors. Too low-sided!
Scaling them down does not inherently improve the breed.
Enough folks in this forum have examined the underlying premises. Even Bruce Kirby came to agree...

There is a wide range between folks relative 'productivity' and their online profile happily sharing in the discussion. For instance, Mr.Lenihan's WoodenBoat-postings are extensive, with the modified Windermere-project taking around, say, near a decade (?).
Having tried my hand at such a project over the last year I can see how things slow down and speed up, and how at times for some of us talking and digressing on to other designs and projects is part of the deal.

Subject:[bolger] Re: Tyson on Schooner on ebay etc.
I'll put a copy of the study in the mail.

about your remarks about the group, if you wonder for instance whether Mr. Hallman actually builds boats you may want to go back in this forum and examine his single-handed output in the shop, on the PC and online.
I hope the new project will help balance your 'books' again...

P.S. I wonder whether Parker's scaled-down 'Pilot-Schooner'-derivative reflects Phil's conclusions on low and shallow sailing-craft ?
