Re: Aluminum Oldshoe

Hey,
Aluminum Oldshoe. That's different and cool. The plans should describe the running rigging, but you have plenty of options (e.g., turning blocks or fairleads?. Lace the sail, mast hoops, or sailtrack?). I suggest drawing a top-down/birdseyeview picture of your OS, and using different colored pens to draw-in how you want to route your halyard, snotter, and mainsheet. Think about the clew tack attachments too. Put the drawing down and think about the problem for a few days, and then return and work a bit more. And then set the drawing aside and think for a few days about why things should be placed where they are and what affect they will have. Eventually you'll reach the "ah ha" point where you know how the boat should be rigged, and at that point you will realize that Phil Bolger had already figured this out, but he wanted you to WORK at the solution so he did not give you the solution.

Somewhere mid-point in this thinking exercise, look at pictures of Micros, Long Micros, and OS's on the web and see how others have rigged their boats. You can also see three horribly boring videos I have posted to Youtube. Each shows how I rigged my Long Micro. Bear in mind that I use sailtrack, and that makes the snotter easier to route and use. Your smaller OS might get by with smaller diameter running rigging- follow Bolger's advice on line size.

The 5- 1/8" X 48" X 120" sheets of aluminum were donated by a friend who owns a metal shop. We've traded favors over the years and so he came up with the material for the hull. The laser cutting was done for cost by another friend who has a shop that laser cuts. I plan to build a dolly and some temporary wood bulkheads to act as a building jig this weekend. Once that is done the tacking and welding of the hull will begin. I set up a picture folder under the name Aluminum Oldshoe. I uploaded a picture of the cut pieces for the hull. I'll add pictures to the folder as work progresses. I would really like to exchange email with anyone who knows about rigging a Cat Yawl, and I'm looking for sails also.

I just left a comment on your picture in the albums... this seems like such a great idea. It will be a very interesting project... I look forward to seeing it progress. Best of luck!
