[bolger] Re: Micro commencement

Thanks everyone for all the notching advice - it's great to be able to draw
on a wide range of experience like this. I should probably have clarified
that I was pondering cutting into the bulkheads, rather than weakening the
stringers. Notched bulkheads with blocks or fillets it is.

Those nice folk at Lee Valley are doing a deal on offcuts of UHMW plastic at
the moment, so I think I have found my rudder bearing material.

Maybe the local orchards will have prunings big enough to fabricate a rudder
stock - aluminum tube seems scarce around here.

Derek
On the MICRO bearing question, wood bearings probably won't work.
When I was shopping for the plex for the sidelights I found a
cheep peice of 1" plex. Used in for rudder bearing. Worked great.
One source of aluminum tube is Aircraft Spruce and Supply 800.824.1930. They
have 3 different specs of tubing in up to 22 sizes 1/4" to 4" O.D. Also
http://aircraft-spruce.comI don't know what Gregg used, but it sounded
like a good idea I might try downsized in the Oldshoe. Regards, Warren
Don't recall. Could have been hardware store from the Macklanburg-Duncan
display, or might have been al. conduit or fence pole...

Gregg,

Where did you get the aluminum tube from? is there a hardware store item you
pressed into service?

Derek
The bearing work fine, but I would think of a wooden stock when it's just
as easy to glass-in a tube. I used aluminum.

I suspect they're not that good. In fact, the Long Micro plans show
pretty much "standard" rudder bearings. Many have reported splitting of
the rudder wooden stock under stress.

Good question! You mean the key #36, don't you? You're right, the
bulkheads drawings do not show any notch. Uhm... Hey, Micro builders
out there!

Best, Pippo
Way to go Derek! I can't wait anymore for the plywood...

How well do those wooden rudder 'bearings' work?

Is it true that PCB intended the cuddy roof stringers not be notched into the bulkheads, or am I mis-reading the prints?
