Re: Martha Jane Builder & new member

I've used PayPal several times (not internationally) and have had no
problems.

There is something called "Paypal" on eBay - both parties to a transaction
have to be registered (Bolger would need a "Business" account, customer
accounts are free). the service takes credit cards or debits bank accounts
(I haven't developed THAT level of trust yet). I'm not sure it works
internationally, but it probably will soon if not now.

How about travelers checks? So banks offer them free.
Terry Cooney
It is the originating bank that skims the cream. I get $10 USD transfers
anywhere in the world. But I have a very small bank and I know every one.
I do business at a larger bank as well and they want $25 for a transfer to
Canada. FedEx and a Chasheers check is faster and cheaper.

International payment by credit card would be a great internet business.
Run it out of a bank on the channel islands so governments don't get nosey
and charge a reasonable 1.5% fee to pay bills and do wire transfers and
someone could have a good business.

How about a VISA/check thingamabob?

or, maybe Phil will let you pay by credit card... maybe through a
place like Rockport Marine or something...

how about just send him something cool of equal value from down under?

Ignorantly yours,
Mike

It is remarkable how apparently primitive and expensive international money
transfers can be in this, the "Age of the Internet" where "distance has
disappeared"! The $30 wire transfer fee seems pretty standard, if my limited
inquiries are any indication. For transfers from USA to Oz, the USA Postal
Service does not (NOT!) provide international money orders (although they do
provide such orders for lots of unlikely third-world countries) Western
Union charges a sliding scale, beginning at the $30 figure or something close
to it, and the recipient must travel to a Western Union office to pickup the
funds - there is an extra charge for WU to make two attempts to call the
intended recipient that the funds are available. My credit union is willing
to transfer any amount of money by wire directly to a recipient's bank, given
the necessary bank code and account info, for a flat rate that is about the
same. My credit union did have American Express "universal" or
"international" gift certificates available at a comparably modest fee - a
few percentage points of the face value - that can be sent by "snail-mail".
(not that relatively speedy "snail-mail" to Oz is inexpensive either) It all
struck me as very primitive. I think there are at least a coupe of pretty
large vendors of boat plans "down under", perhaps in NZ rather than Oz. I
wonder how they cope with this?

Bill, ranting and raving in MN
I visited Phil this summer and they are indeed at 66 Atlantic.

The files posting is the right one. Phil and Susanne moved out of
