Re: Help Micro bulders - Micro bulkhead C

Yes Pippo,
The plywood gussets do not extend to the bottom of the frame to
save on plywood. It is just easier that way. Do not worry if you
choose to ignore this, I really don't think it will matter either
way.
Mahogany frames! I am impressed. Bravo! I used fir, it was
easy to cut and looks pretty, but I am sure that your frame is
stronger than mine. Frame C is one that could use the stiffness of
mahogany since it will be supporting the cockpit seats.
I struggled with frame B and the length of the side staves until
I realized the the baseline was already on the plans just above the
words "no bottom bevel" that made it 1" shorter than the bottom to
allow the chine logs to pass through.
I just fiberglassed the bottom of my Micro prior to putting the
keel batten and reinforcing battens on. It just seemed easier to me.
I hope to get to them next week after the bronze screws and bolts
arrive.

Pippo,

You must remember one of Mr. Bolger's goals in designing MICRO was
economy of materials. Bulkhead "C" is 24 1/2 inches tall, (2-0-4),
or
as they call it around here 2,0, and 4/8ths,
while the pair of gussets are cut from a four foot wide sheet of ply,
resulting in two pieces that are 24" less half of the saw kerf.

Putting the note on the key was, I feel, to keep builders from
worrying. Keeping the gusset up from the bottom puts (again,my
opinion) the nice straight factory ply edge up on top, the bottom
edge is hidden by floorboards.

Dear all - we've been enjoying our new beach house and I really want
to get my Micro ready for next summer. My wife graciously agreed to
allow me a sabbatical leave of a few (TBD) days at home by myself
while she's at the beach with the kids - and her parents -, starting
tonight (yeah), to allow me to work on the boat undisturbed...
Yesterday I bought more mahogany boards for framing, and I'll build
bulkhead C (key #6) tomorrow. One sentence on the Micro key though is
not perfectly clear to me. Bolger says "Note that plywood gussets
don't extend to bottom of hull". What does this mean? The profile
drawing of the Micro plans shows the plywood going all the way down
to the hull... Thanks all, and best, Pippo
