Re: Boats with an open mind

Phil Lea built the worlds most beautiful June Bug from The New Instant Boats
sans plans. He spoke of some difficulty with small print from time to time,
but otherwise obviously had no big problems. He also managed to make some
shrewdly calculated modifications that made Shoe String into a trully high
performance craft. Beat the socks of my JB in eight straight races, not to
mention leaving a pack of Wind Sprints and Light Schooners in the dust for
two of those races!

Building Teal straight from Instant Boats is another obvious choice. Not
only detailed plans, but step by step photo illustrated instructions.

Having said all that... my experience is that plans from HHP are reasonably
priced and well worth it for the option to take scale and angle measurements
directly off the plan.
Good luck in whatever you choose.

Congrats on the 6 hour canoe. This may sound like I'm advertising for
Mr Bolger but just my opinion. He writes with a wisdon and humor
that
would make the whole country better were it standard reading in every
grade school. There is so much value in the book even if you never
build one of the boats in there it will be worth the price. when I
misplaces the first copy my parrents gave be for my birth day in 96 r
97 I went out & bought another. I then found the first but shall keep
both because the first is their gift and the second has their
inscription. I built the crab skiff surf from the double volume
called Bolger Boats. doubled the size of the plans but still wore
out
the book reading the fine dementions. Further just found Mr Bolgers
30
Odd Boats and have sent two enjoyable days rading it again
God luck in building
Jeff

My kids and I recently finished our first boat, the 6 hour canoe. It
was a complete success and am now thinking of our next adventure, a
bolger sail boat. I have "Instant Boats" and "Build the new Instant
Boats" but I have also heard that there are some models that can be
built from "Boats with an Open Mind". Could anyone tell me which
models are covered in enough detail to be built from the book? Any
help of course would be greatly appreciated.
