The original "Instant Boats" with the Teal is gone, too. "Build the New Instant Boats" and "Boatbuilding With Dynamite Payson" are still there.

germkay, the whole idea is to be able to buy legit e-copies of Phil`s books. I want to be shure that I will get my purchase, and that I will get it fast. With Russian Customs and PostService, going online and buying a physical object that has to be shipped will lead to several months of frustration(or a lost package).
Other than several Russian books on boatbuilding, I`ve got The Sharpie book, Chapelle`s Boatbuilding and American Small Sailing Craft - in printed form, and Gary Dierking`s Building Outrigger Sailing Canoes - KINDLE edition. Getting the first three was a nightmare. It`s the suspence.
I would like to read Boats With An Open Mind, 103 Rigs, ...Adventures In Boat Design and other books by Phil Bolger, but the thought of having to wait about half a year, and still have the chance of it getting lost (RussianPost does not refund anything. They just say that they "Have no information about your international package") is not an appealing one.

I have no such firewall, plus I have a Virtual Machine I use as a sandbox for this stuff, so I downloaded the file. This file wasn't dangerous, but it wasn't piracy either.
This was a 1.5 megabyte PDF consisting of 1,911 blank pages. It was not, as claimed, an electronic copy of BWOAM, it was nothing.
I'm hoping the relative paucity of Internet piracy of this material doesn't indicate a lack of demand.

I strongly "second" this approach -- just coming back from a tour of French art-galleries, it's really a shame that the original artist gets paid not much from original purchaser, then subsequent sales of the same piece go at more and more "appreciated" prices based on "fame" of the artist -- too bad that artist cannot benefit in such appreciation in some way. In the case of a book, first editions still are "worth more" to a collector, but at least a second edition gets the info out to a larger (PAYING!!) audience.

Suzanne,
Is it possible to put some of Phil's out of print books (Different Boats, 103 Sailing Rigs, 30 Odd Boats, etc) back into print through Amazon's print-on-demand service? It would make legit copies available (transforming some current pirates into paying customers) and take the money that people are currently spending on outrageously-priced used copies and put it in your pocket.

I think I learned more from 100 Small Boat Rigs than from any other boating book by anyone.

an old MoToR BoatinG magazine. It'd be illegal and unethical to copy those
plans from the magazine and sell them. When Wm. and John Atkin drew those
plans for MoToR BoatinG they signed away the rights to them to Hearst
Publishing, and Hearst could go after anybody who tried to sell copies of
the plans -- including the Atkins! Around 1980 , after a long and
contentious struggle, John Atkin managed to buy back the rights to those
plans, so now Mrs. Atkin can go after anybody who tries to sell copies of
the plans from MB. The plans drawn for MB by other designers are still
owned by Hearst, I imagine, and they could go after you if you tried to
sell copies of them...
Many of the plans in Phil Bolger's books were obviously intended to be
built from the book's pages, as much as the MoToR BoatinG plans, and I
think he even wrote as much somewhere. But selling copies would be immoral
and criminal.

One example is a boat Phil designed that he was not that happy with but the person who commissioned it insisted it be done that way.  So Phil took considerable time presenting the plans for how he felt it should have been designed. And he was his own greatest critic.

Me too. The vast majority of Phil Bolger's work was not published in his books but rather are found spread over his magazine articles, 430+ articles in Messing About in Boats, and perhaps another hundred articles in other magazine. And also, there are reams of his writings in personal letters, hopefully Susanne Altenberger has copies of these (often handwritten) letters in her archive and is taking good care of them. I would like to see them put into some library for research purposes.Regarding copyright, all that printed material is clearly protected under US Copyright doctrine. The hull vessel shapes are treated differently in the law, see the Vessel Hull Design Protection Act.
New to the group. I have built one of Bolgers skiffs through Payson and just started laying the groundwork for the Bobcat I will be building this winter. My question for Nels is, do you have a recommendation for where to start with a book of his? I am very intrigued by him.

There are a few of the Instant Boats books online. I searched boat building, and there is at least one torrent witha a collection of boat building books, some of which contain Bolger boats (including the Instant Boats books). On 2013-06-03, at 4:15 PM, BruceHallman wrote:Of course, proving it never has happened is impossible.

The problem with looking for them is you put yourself at risk as being labelled a pirate yourself. Even if there are pirated copies of books and plans, I also from experience can share with you that the material in question is not in demand with pirates. Modern internet pirates are not interested in boats and boat plans, they are more interested in music and movies.
