Thanks, Bob, and all.  From the photos here - http://www.mbla.co.uk/guide-me.htm - Guide Me appears to change the mainsail between dipping and standing lug to suit the conditions.

If you do a google search on "Guide Me lugger" you'll find a wealth of information on the Guide Me, a hundred year old engineless lugger that has been widely cruised by Johnno and Judy Brickhill. They rebuilt the boat and lived aboard, raised a family and cruised for many years.
