I have used heat shrink tubing instead of a fid.
leave about an inch of the tubing off the end of the line to act as a fid. Cut it off when you're done. Have left the heat shrink on to ease length adjustment on whoopie slings that are lightly loaded.
Heavily loaded splices fail at a too-abrupt taper, so don't leave heat shrink on a critical splice.
What fids are people using for splices like Brummel splices in small
diameter 12 strand Dyneema? 3/16th or 1/4.
