RE: [bolger] RE: Micro with chine runners

Now that I google chine runners and see what they are, I see that Chris Crandall is right, a certifiably bad idea for a Micro, or any rockered box-boat. Make the boat that much wider, if you must. On multichine boats or round boats with no keel, they are bilge boards, and have a place, as part of a certain set of compromises. One thing that anyone considering a Micro should know is that, though as we always say, sharpies do so well because they present a vee-shaped bottom to the water, Micro’s is a very lop-sided vee. Phil once told me he thought Micro should heel about 11 degrees, and truly, you will rarely heel her more: a can of beer sits quite safely on its own little bottom on the deck while you are bashing along on a reach at 6 mph, which I once did for 7 hours straight on Lake Ontario. I got quite tipsy, but the boat stayed quite flat.

Chine runners for Micro? A Certified Bad Idea.

Micro is not slab-sided, she has an immersed keel. This means you don't need chine runners--the keel does all that work.

Were you considering replacing the keel with runners only? Oh, that can't be the thought. She would be so changed in balance, motion, and resistance to heeling, you'd be replacing your stable dray horse with a squirrel. The idea has not one thing to recommend it that doesn't create a substantially larger problem in its wake.

The keel also carries the ballast.
