I have a 9 hp 2 stroke tohatsu on my long micro. It is a very light engine. Cruising speed 5.5 knots at little more than half throttle. Great engine fairly cheep. Have pounded through 20 knt head winds for hours at about 5 knots . Better to have a bit more power without too much weight ...me thinks. I think Mr Bolger rated Long Micro for a 6 hp but the 9.5 Tohatsu weighs the same as most 6 hp motors.

Thanks all. I'm probably going to go with a 5hp. To cheap to buy a good 9.9 and font like the weight. It's just for launching and recovery.

I use a 3hp electric on Micro to get in and out of the marina at half to full power in decent weather. I think one of those 9.9hp motors with the high thrust prop would cover all cases for your Martha Jane, less in sheltered water.

I am a fan of the Tohatsu's. The small Mercuries are just re branded Tohatsu's. Mine has never failed.

I might add- two stroke. Cheaper and easier to maintain and a lot lighter. Flush out the engine after using in salt water!

 

After 24 years I recently had the lower unit and carb rebuilt by a local motorhead after the shaft seal failed. $324.00- the first dollars expended (other than the $85 prop) since purchased. Compression still on spec . on a $250 motor bought used. I have heard a lot of complaints on the more recent Tohatsu's but the older ones are good motors.

I'm now considering moving up to a 3.5 Mercury Mariner. I m not looking for passage making ability, just to get off the launch ramp and back in. Also don't want a very heavy engine. Or expensive. Does anyone have experience with this and have any suggestions as to suitable motors, horse power etc. ?

Find a good used two stroke 5HP or so. I found an aftermarket 4-blade prop for the1990 8hp Nissan on the stern of my Whalewatcher that moves her forward and more importantly, backward, with authority. this motor has worked flawlessly for motoring over many, many windless miles of cruising. You need a good motor/prop combination with these high-sided sharpies for close in low speed maneuvering in marinas, etc.; the rudders are small and simply not efficient enough for good control at low speeds.

 

Raise the motor when sailing!
