RE: [bolger] Digest Number 5936
I am not sure if I know how to post to this forum any more but I'll make a try.
Close on to 40 years ago, in the mid-70s, I attended the Mystic Seaport small craft gathering. I met and spoke with Phil Bolger there. An interesting conversation ensued that became the basis of a very enjoyable subsequent correspondence (old fashioned written and mailed correspondence).
However, what I also remember from that day is there was a Surf sailing. Like the one in this delightful video, it was painted, not varnished, and built plain and simple - BUT, it was sailing circles around all the fancy "round piano" Whitehalls, wherries, etc. Phil would probably have said modestly that it did better in light airs but might not in all conditions. Of course, light airs are what most of us prefer to sail in, so it's practical performance for the real world of recreational sailing.
Even these simplest of boats by Phil are pure genius.
