RE: [bolger] Re: 1950? 15 Rater Rudder Rule Racer Review

Good day. I think the canted boom goes two ways. it is carrying the sail higher and if you put a lot of presure on the boom the mast wil bend and you can go better against the wind. hilbert.
I should have said "_equal luff and_equal area jib headed sails, one with a moderately canted foot is more efficient than one with a right angled foot? Why that would be is an interesting question..." - Bill

Could it be that when comparing equal area jib headed sails, one with a moderately canted foot is more efficient than one with a right angled foot? Why that would be is an interesting question...

"anybody figure out why the boom is canted up like that?"

Nope.

I wondered about that too. Head room would be too obvious, no? Surely not so much for vision ... How about keeping the clew out of the water when heeled hard over in an attempt to minimise knockdown?  ... narrow boat... largish, and high sail... waves.. rounding the downwind mark... whoops..

The text tells the story (of the sail shape): "The luff is the maximum length allowed for this sail area class".

This is a boat designed to a rating rule. The shape of the sail is to maximize both the sail area and the luff length within the allowable limits.

Also, getting the sail area as high as possible, and giving head room and keeping the boom clear of the water were all probably in Phil's mind.

Without actually looking, sure reminds me of a Flying Dutchman, or any of the Uffa Fox dinghys.
Very cool. Even then he was into strange rigs--anybody figure out why the boom is canted up like that? Big roachy main... cool stuff. Anathema to his "grown up" philosophy.
Looks a lot like some of the old Uffa Fox 14 designs, I think. I am a long way from
home and can't look at my dad's old Fox books. Small planing light weight dinghy,
looks like fun.

Good thing that the bubble over my head full of my first not-best response can (usually) not be seen.
