BO>Best, Pippo

Notch them if you're going to jump on top of the cuddy. In theory, epoxy
should just weld the wood together without need of any countersinking.
In practice, simple butted stringers on Lady kate (AS29) supporting both
the foredeck and the cantilevered forward end of the doghouse haven't
hacked the pace, and I'm having to bracket them now.

OTOH don't notch so deeply as to weaken the bulkhead framing.

why not run a support under the beam ends like a 1x2 or 3 screwed and
epoxyed to the bulkheads. It will be out of the way and if you curve it to
the underside of the deck it should look very trim

This will enable the stringer to be full strength and not split. The
bulkhead
framing is only there to give a nail and glue surface, so cutting
notches that are really gaps won't make any difference. A split
stinger,
on the other hand, is a bitch to fix.

Hi Bernie - if the bulkhead frame is notched - why add a block to it?? Steve

It seems this could apply to the Martha Jane as well. I wonder if anyone has
ever cut out a half circle, notched that and epoxied it to the bulkhead frame
as an alternative - then you would have the best of both worlds it seems.
What do you think? Steve - ( thinking about the upcoming deck on mj)
