Bruce’s list is more inclusive than my brief assessment.
And that is all to better.
Here in Gloucester the seemingly ‘endless’ boat-project a.k.a. SACPAS-3 should at long last get wet soon.
With perfect weather on hand some minor epoxy work is left, a final coat of paint over near everything inside her, a bit more wiring, and a shrinking list of modest hardware-installations such as those fine SS-Cleats.
The 225HP V-6 that looks so imposing up close tilts up very nicely within the boat’s stern-extension with about 1.5 inches to spare to cover different prop-configurations, -diameter and -pitch – very gratifying that, in terms of not having dreamt up and then carefully built an incorrect geometry...
And that means that to ready her for use after the shipment to who-knows-where in the standard ISO 40-foot container is a matter of pulling her out of the box on to rollers (freshly-cut saplings), recharging the batteries, putting fresh fuel into those tanks and once afloat tilting down the OB to dead-vertical.
Next question: How will that container-procedure work ?
I’ll keep you posted.

You have encountered the cost differential between mass produced boats and hand crafted boats. Its called productivity. In the US , you can buy a thermoplastic dinghy which rows pretty well and sails after a fashion for less than $1000. To build a similar sized lapstrake dinghy (Oughtreds Guillemot), you could buy a kit for around $1500, buy the necessary timber (not included in the kit) for $100-150, add in a couple of hundred dollars for epoxy and another couple of hundred for paint, a hundred or so for various disposable items (gloves, sandpaper, masks, brushes, etc), and whatever you want to spend on fasteners and hardware. Spend a 100 hours or so putting the thing together and another 50 hours painting and fitting out (or a lot more if you are going for “yacht” level finish). The result will certainly be superior to a Walker Bay dinghy, but even not counting anything for labor, twice the cost. To build a Guillemot commercially, I think you would have to charge somewhere around $6-7000.
Unfortunately, there is not a large market for rowing boats in the US and the limited number of commercial builders is concentrated in the northeast and northwest of a very large country, so shipping costs add to the purchase price. Ergo, for most of us, the only way to obtain a rowing boat is to build one. One need not have a lapstrake boat. And there are many flat-bottomed and/or stitch and glue row boat plans available from everyone from Atkins to Welford. There is good news. Forty years ago, there was a paucity of row boat plans and they were advertised in specialty news letters. There has since been a revival in wooden/amateur built boat plans, including rowing boats. With the advent of the internet, it is possible to buy plans from designers all over the world and my plan collection includes plans from England and New Zeeland as well as the US . It could be argued that we are in the golden age of small boats.
Finally, I will observe that everything has two prices—what the seller will take and what the buyer will pay. I think that it is unlikely that anyone will pay $20K for an Acorn !5 unless, perhaps, they are buy a piece of art. My boats get used, are finished to workboat standards, and are lightly maintained—scruffy, but loved, and worth more to me than what most buyers would be willing to pay…

hello
Bruce,
I am very much aware of your isometrics, I have been looking at it in detail.
It gets complicated for me, because if I wish to use another designers boat, I
simply list to one website, then the prospective builder can buy the boat, or
buy the boat plan.
I have 16 Phil Bolger boats on the list.
Some of the boats might be too much sail and not really enough oar. The
delineation between a boat optimised for sail, and rowing is not easy, there
are probably a few too many on the list, because there are some boats that are
too much optimised for sailing, all I can say is the list is imperfect
For Bolger books, I only have dynamite payson's book, which is not actually
written by Phil Bolger. Need to rectify this
The world is moving to the internet, when there is a boat plan that is easily
accessed via the internet, a simple link suffices. For a few cases I have had
to list a Phil Bolger boat twice, once to show the photos, and once to show
where the plans can be bought. The work involved in getting all 600 of Phil
Bolger's boat plans easily accessable via the internet is huge. Would be nice,
but the huge amount of work, for a modest financial return, its very
understandable why it is not done. (yes there are a few on instant boats.com)
Going off topic, last couple weeks I have been looking at heaps of rowboats,
close to 330 or 340 at this time. I came across an Iain Oughtred Acorn 15 boat
for sale for $20K US. You gotta be kidding me. For comparison I came across
some plastic boats sold in Finland ,
called Suvi boats. Very nice rowboats, they have a little transom where a 2hp
motor can be added. They are a fraction heavy, 85kg for a 15ft boat, the
hullform is a little bit of a compromise being fuller aft to support weight of
a person sitting aft with the outboard, but they are not bad. The thing that
struck me, was the cost, $1500 US for a 15ft rowboat
They make hundreds of these boats, and can use economies of scale to keep the
costs down. It does seem teh way of the future, fiberglass/plastic production
rowboats, not quite as good as wood ones, but if the price is a tenth that of a
quality wood boat, what is going to sell? I cannnot explain why US plastic
rowboats cost so much, and similar boats in
Finland cost so little. If Suvi
start exporting their boats to the
US , I am sure they would so well
(no I dont have shares in Suvi boats)

Suzanne,
I live in the mid south and around 1970, rowboat designs were difficult to come by. I credit Phil with starting the wooden/traditional boat resurrection with his Glouster Gull and at one point, I built a Thomaston Galley (and much later, a Sweet Pea and a Scooner (now named Light Schooner).Happily, there is now a plethora of rowing/pulling boat designs available and the internet makes plans available from all over the world. At the moment, my rowing boat is one of Doug Hylan’s Beach Peas. But I’m looking at Victoria . Are plans available? If so, how much?
In the early 70’s, I bought a “portfolio” of boat plans from Phil (primarily to get plans for Monhegan) which included plans for Victoria . The portfolio was incorporated intoSmall Boatsand I suppose I could loft and build from either one, but my old eyes appreciate bigger plans and I’m happy to pay for the convenience.
A dedicated book or web site would be welcome.

Peter,
good idea to attempt
to accumulate human/oar-powered designs.
But “...a few Bolger
rowboats...?”
There are over 4 dozen designs from short fat square
punts over gorgeous pulling-boats, pinnaces, and proven ocean-crossing cruisers
to a long-ship you can go row yourself right now. Many of these have been
built.
I’ll claim that few design-houses have covered and see executed this breadth of conceptual approaches on oar-powered craft. However I am too booked to help add to your list, but a lot of these designs have been ‘out there’ in books and magazines for a long time.
This episode here
suggests that many folks will have to help you with this endeavor in order for
it to achieve plausible ‘online authority’ as a depository of increasingly
comprehensive knowledge and data.
So, lets hope that folks here will
point you to designs out of this office not on your list yet.
Of course,
we/I should long ago have put a dedicated book into print to cover those
designs...

I am all for you doing this. Obviously.
So let’s hope for folks helping you.
And, yes, the books will be one solid resource.
Testing your library’s Inter-Library Loan reach is a good exercise anyway.
Messing About In Boats out of Wenham, MA has featured near 490 design-columns by Bolger and PB&F.

hello Susanne
my trouble is that Phil Bolgers boat designs tend to be
in books, and dont turn up in google searches very well. I can go to the local
library and start reading. I have read one of Phil's books a whilst back, but my
memory has dimmed the details.
Again, the list is just a start, the more
the better. My apologies for my lack of knowledge, I tonly know what I know. I
have no trouble at all, with anyone taking over the list,,, improving it,,
making additions, and putting it in a place that it will receive more traffic,
then that improved list can be the official list. My guess is the official list,
is the one that someone calls official. Again the list is a just a start and is
totally open source
