Modern approach is a drone. But if you ever have a chance to see the video made at least 40 years ago by Yves Gelinas of his round-the-world sail aboard his Alberg 30 (his "proof-of-concept" voyage for his invention, the simple Cape Horn self-steering gear), he sent his very valuable 16mm film movie-cam UP A KITE-STRING (!) to take photos of his boat underway, out in the ocean..... incredible. Incredibly innovative!

I agree. Need one helluva selfie stick to get pictures of yourself sailing.
Only thing better is if someone got video of her moving at a clip with you at the helm : -)

They claim that the two happiest days in a boat owner's life are th ey day that you buy a boat, and the day you sell your boat. Hogwash. The happiest day in your life is when someone sends you pictures of your Bolger boat under sail. Almost eight years to the day after I launched my Long Micro, I just received pictures of her under sail. I was headed north from Gore Bay, Canada that day and the winds were light and from the north. I was still able to ease the snotter and make respectable headway, tacking north. Once clear of the bay the winds built and I enjoyed a romp north to the Benjamins.
