Re: [bolger] Bird's mouth mast question?

I think the real strength is from loading the interior corner of the adjoining stave.  With the easy staves, all you have is glue in shear.

I thought there wasalsoan illustration somewhere in the group site that shows how birdsmouth spars are put together.  The only thing I found was the excel spreadsheet that calculates the geometry based on various inputs.  It's in Bolger maingroup under files.

yes this is very nice.  if this makes you think of making the mast from easy staves inswtead of the birdsmouth. I think the birdsmouth is stronger because each stave has a bigger glu surface. greetings Hilbert.

When cutting the birdsmouth it is important to have sharp ends to the beak.  If you don't cut the birdsmouth deep enough and the ends have little flats on them you will end up with longitudinal grooves in your mast.  If you are rounding your mast you may get rid of these but if you are leaving any of the mast 8 sided the epoxy filler to fill these grooves is unsightly.

I use a table saw set to 45°, the depth set to just a bit more than half the thickness and the fence set to the desired stave width.  Run it through, turn it end for end and run it through again - perfect birdsmouth shapes.  I did consider a router bit, but after  having used the table saw approach I can see that this would be more difficult to set up and control.

Beautifully illustrated and explained.

This goes in my permanent Boat Building file!

Greetings,

When sawing out the notch on the staves of a bird's mouth mast, how deep does one cut the notch?

Thank you.
Good day . its 45 degrees .to the middle. greetings Hilbert.

My understanding has always been that the notch goes until the outside of the stave.
