Re: [bolger] Spreading the 'Gospel' of Low-Carbon Fishing-Craft via the 2016 University of Rhode Island...
- 1. Part of the Working Waterfront practices in Gloucester for instance is the tying up alongside each other, sometimes 6+ deep, with clear-cut routines shared amongst crews around getting a boat clean out of the middle of that raft without undoing the whole.
- 2. In the standard ’marina’-geometries of hulls side-by-side on opposing floats, in the space for 2 ‘fat’ boats, 3 or perhaps even 4 ‘skinny’ ones will fit by beam.
- 3. Publicly-owned fish-piers can lead in demonstrating to all the re-arrangement of floats and finger-piers to match the re-emergence of narrower-&-longer boats.
- 4. Fee-Schedule by ‘Square-Footage of Foot-Print’ versus just ‘Length’, which may come to result in a similar bill per hull.
Other responses to the question will emerge.
Initially, on publicly-owned facilities, long-&-lean hulls per pound-of-displacement might get a subsidy to encourage migration to the more rational types away from the short-&-fat Federal Dictate.
Etc.

thanks for the kind words.
Starting explicitly on this in 2002 this has been very expensive and emotionally exhausting since, when Phil could not get traction with his and our best thinking on this, here in his own ‘homeport’ and the N.E. coastline at large.
But that great frustration on my part now continues to fuel this push towards ‘reason’.
This destructive thinking has to to stop by putting ‘sun-light’ on its ugly details and embarrassing unscientific arguments support it.
We’ll see.

good test of fundamental priorities – after establishment of the current system stripped many AK shore-side villages of their economic viability and leaving the socio-economic challenges at the door-step of eventually state and federal agencies.
First thingto do for you is to nag local and regional papers and national magazines, blogs, eco-warriors with this ‘story’ and link to the URI/UNOLS conference.
Second stepto do the same with State and Federal delegates, as they are told one thing by self-serving (corporate) ‘leaders’ while the reality damages too many and thus the public at large and your tax-coffers.
The industry-‘leaders’ really think that this is ‘their’ fish/seafood. It actually is ‘ours’ – and we are not seeing even royalties etc. while resource, shoreside communities and tax-base gets damaged by ‘self-entitled’ folks.
Phil and I speculated that neither a
- ‘Libertarian’-,
- nor ‘Chamber-of-Commerce’-Republican-,
- nor ‘Liberal’- ,
- nor Tea-Party-
Supreme Court would agree with this resource-grab and concurrent damage to socio-economics, jobs- and tax-base, while indifferently contributing to CO emissions, and thus ocean-acidification, putting at risk the very resource at issue here.
Third stepcould be to pepper fishing-organizations with e.g. this presentation.
Many ‘knuckle-heads’ will laugh at you out of their own ignorance , with other high-carbon princes denying the realities.
The smart ones – assuming they don’t already know this... - will see the political opportunities to rebuild their Fleet to match 21st-century ‘Low/Least-Carbon Structural and Operational Principles’.
Those are the ones to cultivate a relationship with.
And pols should like these folks...
Lots to be done to right a growing stupid-&-evil’ that does no good for most.
Suzanne: there is talk here in Pacific NW of the opportunity, yea necessity, to "re-capitalize" the entire Pacific fishing fleet -- as average age of vessels is around 42 years... probably will not happen unless Feds offer outright grants or at least loan-guarantees. Could be a HUGE employment boost in our area.
Vigor industries has come up with a prototype design for a 350-foot ( ! ) catcher/porcessor/factory boat for deep-sea offshore fishing -- suitable for many fisheries, some economy-of-scale if many different fishing-styles can be serviced by same hull... but I don't see this as anything like your proposal - these are once again trending toward really big, corporate-affordable-only not-for-family-fishermen fleet. see: http://vigor.net/news-press/jensen-maritime-and-vigor-to-unveil-new-factory-trawler-design-at-pacific-m
Watch for real effort to get the FEderal Government behind such re-building of the entire fleet, in the next few years -- but I fear your voice for "green" and sustainable fishboats may be drowned out by the big bucks of a very high-rolling industry.
Here's an article on fishboat-industry response to the Alaska Fisheries "limit" of 58' vessels - a fishboat nearly half as wide as it is long - certainly "cheating" any7 effort to limit this fishery! http://www.marinelink.com/news/designing-limit-the339169.aspx -- just as you spoke, a length limit is NO way to control the predation of fishboats on the resource!

Yes.
Give it another
‘whirl’ to get that lingo down, since it is both not that ‘high-brow’ – “Susanne
can do this after all...” and this does affect your Working Waterfront as
well.
The AK and BC fishing-fleets are not where they would be if neither
NOAA/NMFS nor TRANSPORT CANADA did not insist on rather peculiar ‘High-Carbon’
regulations.
Example: The ‘sponson-ing’-mania running wild in the
Northwest is a ‘end-stage’ indicator of utter confusion and
un-ecological/unsustainable priorities.
There have never been fishing craft
as ‘obese’ as we are seeing them under these regs.
This is
actually quite a scandal when neither governmental agencies have their heads
straight on thus nor eco-warriors are arguing for ‘Green Fleets’.
Decadence
in full swing.
This may change however.

Thank you, Susanne.
Most of this was Out of Scope for me, but I think I got the general idea that more efficient designs are needed, but discouraged by current regulations, correct?

Well, Bill, pretty much the same mess in your neck of the woods...
At this point in time, the US Navy may be on a ‘greener’ track than the UNOLS university research fleets ?!
A case could be made.
During the 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review, Navy leaders unambiguously accepted ‘climate change’ and were then already exploring ‘greener’ fuel, but also how to jack up their naval bases...
