Re: Idaho"s Larger Sister, 38 footer?

Hi Jef,
I am building a "Dakota" in northern Michigan. It is similar to
Idaho, but has a bit more rocker and is not designed to use as much
horsepower, to operate at as high a speed, or to plane. It is built
right side up starting with a 2 ft. wide, full length center shoe
that is 2 inches (4 layers of 1/2" ply) thick. The bottom panels (3
layers of 1/2") run fore and aft, two sheets wide with the shoe
acting
as a giant fore and aft butt strap. So the center of the bottom is
3 1/2 " thick. I suspect I will have well over 2 tons of boat when it
is finished, fueled and filled with cruising gear.
I have just this week finished the bottom and have begun scarfing
the chine logs. Next week, I will begin joining the panels for the
topsides. I prefer to join the five sheets of each panel on a long
work table so I can work on a flat horizontal surface for glassing
and
finishing. I use a system of traveling block and tackles to lift and
move the 38' sheets of ply working by myself. The 1/2" ply is much
easier to bend when it is joined into long sheets.
I finally got a scanner last week and will try to get some
pictures in the vault soon.
