Juin Bug

Dear Matthew,

Hearty congrats on the Juin Bug. Commiserations on the subsequent damage
(quel domage!).

I've had a few mishaps with mine - mostly because I built skinnier than
spec. My centre thwart cracked in the middle when I sat down heavily
(framing a tad too light). There have been cracks around the chines (chine
logs too light).

Dent in the bottom (me too heavy).

Nevertheless - the whole shebang is still holding together very nicely thank
you and it's a great wee (long, but wee) rowing boat and a SUPERB tender.

Fragile, but forgiving.

A toute a l'heur,

Bill Samson (OK I'm an old romantic and a sucker for JB's good(?) looks)

PS Greetings to all the guys I met at Port Townsend last weekend. What a
blast! (Especially for an innocent wee Scotch laddie like masel')

PPS Vive l'Auld Alliance!
Matthew,

With a slight nick taken out of one side, I appreciate your joking
about my opinion of June bug.

I never intended to insult you June Bug guys. I have had a ton of fun
with Surf, over the years, so I'm a victim of enthusiasm. I promise
to be kinder to your boats in the future. Promise!

Take care,
Pete Reynolds

Well, despite Pete Reynolds's disparaging comments ;-) I am quite happy
to be almost done with my June Bug "Polliwog." As we are almost out of
boating weather, even here in southeastern France, I am finishing her
up as a rowboat and leaving the rig for a winter project. I've got
some final color coats of paint and the hardware to finish up, so
hopefully we'll be in the water this weekend.

About the rig, I am adapting a windsurfer rig to the boat, and it jus t
occurred to me that I could try to use it as a free sail, rather than a
fixed sail, as Payson did with his. My rig is 5.0 sq meters, so a
little larger than his, which proved to be too small.

Have any June Bug builders tried this, and how did it work out? Also,
I don't quite understant how the Dynamite rig is supposed to be
attached in its socket (if at all). Can anyone explain the set up?

Thanks and regards,
