Tiny ship meets tall ships
Hi all.
Took my Bolger Old Shoe out yesterday.
Yesterday was a very special day. Pensacola had 4 tall ships coming in. 3 of them had about 100 foot masts and one had 130 foot mast.
If you get on Yahoo.com and do a search for "tall ships pensacola wear" ...the third or so hit is about an hour and half video of them coming through the pass, along the bay, and into the port. You'll see that right link is on facebook and last 1:29:42 (WEAR 3 is our local TV channel).
If you look carefully when there are about 54 minutes left in the video, at the very bottom of the screen (and sometimes cut off) you'll see the aluminum Old Shoe with two people in it. A few minutes later when there are about 52 minutes remaining you'll see a tall ship to left and tall ship to the right. We are on the other side of the ships going a bit slower and we visually pass though the gap (I wasn't actually between the ships). Then about a minute later we reappear at the back side of the right ship.
When we appear in the gap you can see a one man patrol boat approach us. I was a bit worried I'd get chewed out for being too close though everybody out there was way closer than they were supposed to be...but at least I kept a steady course..unlike a fair number of yahoos darting around left and right and making the mother of all choppy water due to wakes coming from all directions all the time). When the patrol guy got closer he yelled "You guys sure are brave!". I did the finger pointing towards the head with a circular motion and yelled back "No, we are just crazy and stupid!).
The other funny thing was beside the tall ships there was an inverse relationship between the size of the sailboat and whether they had any sails out. Almost all the smaller sailboats had their sails up....most of the bigger ones didn't have any up.
I'd have been embarrassed as a sailor to do that. If those tall ships can manage that rats nest of sails and rigging in a light steady wind in good seas and I can be out in my 11 foot bathtub with a 2.5 hp motor...I think you guys with sailboats that cost as much as cheap house around here that could blue water cruise if needed could put up at least one sail. It was like the nautical equivalent of taking somebody to your best friends kick ass BBQ joint and they order the salad !
The shame !
If anybody can provide a direct link to that video I'm sure other would appreciate at it. My computer is wonky as heck and I have trouble doing that.
I'm going to write up a "trip report" later.
take care all.
