3/8 MDO

I sheathed the bottom of the aft hull of the Folding Schooner with
3/8 MDO that happened to be in stock in my local lumberyard. This was
a very easy botom compared to the 1/4 and glass for the bottom of the
front hull. The Folding Schooner has significant rocker and the
panels though heavy and somewhat stiffer than fir took the curve well
and lay very fair. It is wonderful stuff to work with. I have also
used 1/2"MDO for the rudder and bilge boards. I have run across some
small voids when I planed down the leading edge on the rudder and
bilge boards but nothing mortal. This material is very superior to
the Fir Marine Ply at the local yard and at Condon's in White Plains.
I see no need to add cloth or epoxy except to the exposed plys on the
rudder and to the end grain. Looks like a good material to me if you
don't have easy access to quality Marine Ply. No sanding, finishes
like a dream. I remember a post from someone who worked in the
industry who said that the quality control standards for Marine and
MDO were similar and in fact MDO often got better quality control.
