The term forcastle (foc's'le) was used as early as 1400 to denote a
short raised deck at the fore end of a vessel. It was raised like a
castle to command the enemy's decks. By 1490 it had come to mean the
forward part of a vessel and by 1840 had come to mean the forward part
of a vessel, under the deck, where the sailor's live. (This info is
from the Oxford English Dictionary. The dates are the first known
occurence in print of the each particular meaning of the word.)
