Re: Kick-up rudder and leeboard

Phil Lea put exactly that kind of rudder on his JB. A great idea. I plan to
do the same with mine. Gypsy has a kick-up rudder and is a great improvement
over wrestling the rudder off as you come into shore. Study HHP's pictures
and text re. Gypsy's rudder in the New Instant Boats. I'm sure it would work
perfect as presented or could be made a bit lighter, like Phil's. For me the
leeboard is of less importance, though would probably work well as kick-up
and be relatively easy to build. I find the slot system works well and is
super simple to yank up and out of the way in a hurry. Main considerations
for the kick-up leeboard will be to assure the strength of a pivoting mount
and make sure its well out of the way for rowing when in the up position.
Good luck.
