Re: scantlings
In Dave Geer's other book which is a colection of columes from boat
builder there is a much easyer to read chart where boat length =
thickness. I Almost bought elaments of boat strength but it justwent
way over my head. as to thickness of wharrams designs as the edges
are robuskly held a rupture would be a matter of tearing a large
sheet
also because the angle of colision from front of below the blow may
very well be deflected. IMHO ;-)

I did find two sources of scantling info... but I'd love more leads.
If anyone has run across these books I'd love your opinion?

Westlawn Graduate and acclaimed author Dave Gerr has written a
comprehensive
handbook for calculating scantlings for boats and yachts. "The Elements
of Boat
Strength" presents scantling rules developed by the author for
calculating the structure of
monohull vessels of between 10 and 120 feet LOA, both power and sail,
displacement or
planing, and making speeds up to 45 knots. The rules apply to boats
built by conventional
methods of fiberglass, wood, wood-epoxy composite, steel, and aluminum.

OF YACHTS

by Lloyd's Register of Shipping
Here's the real deal; Lloyd's scantlings for
wooden yachts as of
1929. Those interested in building to the
traditional model will
find this reference invaluable in
determining the answers to
structural questions from a source that was
the absolute last
word in the time of the greatest activity in
wooden yacht building.
This is the entire work on wooden yachts;
Volume II of the series
was "Revised Rules for Composite and Steel

the Rules for Steam Engines and Boilers and
Electric Fittings".
